I still don’t see my decision yet

18chai - did you get a letter in the mail today? How did you find out no merit money? We are in CA too and have heard nothing so far. So…does that mean it’s Cal?

jnrsmom -
called the UMD admin office and they told us the sad news.
In Calif. it’s between CAL and Davis. We liked the campus and attitude better at Davis. My wife wants to go visit both again April 17 & 18.

Oh, I didn’t know they would actually answer your question about merit $$. I thought you had to wait for the letter. I run to the mailbox daily! Do you happen to have the phone number you called? So does that mean that UMD is definitely out of the picture now? My daughter is going to decide about visiting Cal after seeing UMD again on the 17th. Are you in S CA or N CA?

Im not happy with UMD as of right now. They did not give out anything to me and my friends.

My friend is 2nd in our class, with a 1390/2080, 34 ACT and plays varsity sports and lettered in those too. He got 2000 a year as an out of state student, with about 8k in loans.
My other friend is 9th in our class with a 1400/2110, with a great resume etc. got 4000 a year.

They seemed to be very stingy to people in my school. Looks like im not going to go there.

edit//both my friends were invited into the honors program as well. What a joke.

Randomness of UMD. For those of you who have not read my previous post, I am 2nd in class , 2330 SAT but not even considered for B/K scholarships due university’s screw up with processing a batch of applications this year. Sadly I fell into this group and was admitted after B/K qualifiers were decided. HOWEVER I just learned that someone at my school just got a FULL RIDE B/K. She is someone who is nowhere near top of the class in either rank or SAT scores and is not very involved in school either. Those of you not getting enough aid from UMD, it is probably the fact that they messed up the application process this year. It sounds like they just want to get the response part of the admissions process over with and don’t really care if you come or not. Or that is how I felt which is why I have decided against UMD.

UMD is horrible when it comes to FA…absolutely the worse.

We know many people who would love to attend, but there is no FA. I think they use this as a way to get people to decline the acceptance so they can keep their numbers right.

Wait until next yr…there will be a ton of surprises regarding registration for Spring…I can’t tell you how many hoops we had to jump through b/c of FA.

@idk
Are you from a large public school in the suburbs of New York?

just curious - it seems like those who were passed over by UMD as far as merit $ in spite of fantastic stats must have gotten some decent acceptances/merit$ from schools much higher ranked than UMD!

yeah i didnt get banneker key but i got $8,000 presidential and another $4,000/yr engineering scholarship in the mail today!

but cornell gave me a totally affordable package so i think im going to cornell =]

Maryland’s financial department is also one of the worst I have ever dealt with. When my guidance counselor called them up on behalf of about 5 of our seniors, asking why no one in our school received money, the response was “We do not negotiate financial aid”, and hung up. My guidance counselor called them up and said that they will never get another app from our school which is obviously a lie and childish but still.

My efc was 9k, and I received 5k in loans. Im just going to pull that 30k from my back pocket. This was for EA as well.

I got a 12k presidential scholarship and was admitted to the honors program. I’m from out of state and have a 4.5/2350. There’s a good chance that I’m going to UMD, my top choice is Wash U but I didn’t get nearly enough money from them. I asked for more, but if that doesn’t work out then I’m almost definitely a Terp.

ndfightingirish,

Our counselor as well as the counselors the the other 3 HS in our district, had a SPECIAL meeting over UMD’s procedures last year it was so bad. No return phone calls, lost transcripts/recs/no decisions. It was not a pretty environment last year with the kids locally and UMD, this year supposedly most kids didn’t bother applying. Usually about 20-30 apply a year, this year maybe 6-8.

I am really surprised to read about everyone else’s experience with UMD admissions. I have to say, we are also from OOS, but had no problem at all. DS applied the end of November online, but I know that transcripts and rec’s went in two separate envelopes from the school and were received without a hitch. The online checklist worked well too, posting everything in a timey manner.

They also took very good care of DS when he went alone for his Banneker Key interview. He was paired with a host student in Anne Arundel that really gave him a great idea of life at UMD. He came back thrilled and anxious to attend.

I’m sorry your experiences were not favorable, but I just wanted to include our experience as well.

I also had a very favorable experience, but I know there was a problem with our saludictorian’s financial aid, but it seemed like her fault.
