Merit Scholarships and CAPT scores??

I was wondering: are CAPT scores used in determining merit scholarships for instate students? I didn't take the CAPT because I moved in to CT late, but other kids who did got better aid, in fact in one case, someone got better aid with 350 less on the SAT (out of 2400) and .3 less GPA.

When did you apply? They give priority to students who apply EA.

And I’m OOS, so I don’t know anything about CAPT.

being an in-state kid, i know that receiving the capt scholar award can help with admission to uconn and other in state schools but i’m not sure how much of an actual influence that it makes. I’m sure it helps if the capt scores are good but I don’t think there is a lot of emphasis or attention paid to them

I applied in October.

My theory is that the lack of CAPT scores can have a huge effect. I didn’t even take the CAPT, and I think that this adversely affected my chances for scholarships. I don’t think it would matter much if you got 4/5s or 3/4s.

I don’t think the fact that you didn’t take the capt would have too much affect on your application. Ton’s of out of state kids get in with merit money and scholarships and they obviously don’t take capts. As long as you have good grades etc. your chances shouldn’t be hurt just because you didn’t take the state’s performance tests.

I don’t think that CAPTS drastically affect your chances in receiving merit money or any scholarships of that sort. I do know that, when I sent my application out in early November, my Guidance Counselor sent my CAPT scores along with my transcripts, since I did nearly perfect on all of them. He said, “It couldn’t hurt for them to see that you did well on a State issued test.” But I honestly doubt that it would boost you above other students who are OOS who receive just as much scholarships as any in state student would.

Applying early action gives you the best chance of admission and possibly scholarships. Many of the people who applied from my school for early action received full tuition (leadership award). I received this award as well, and I know others who received it who have significantly lower test scores and grades as I do. So to answer your question, I don’t believe CAPT affects anything. It is still based on your scores, your activities, etc.

Yeah I know a few kids that got the full tuition (even 2 that got nutmeg- supposedly). I was just wondering why I only got 1/2 tuition, even though I have better stats than the kids who got full tuition. I thought that instate student w/o CAPT scores might be a reason. whatever, i’m most likely not going to uconn anyways.

Many of the full tuition scholarships that many people seem to have received are most likely the Leadership Award. This award considers academic merit, but as indicated by its title, also takes into a tremendous consideration your activities and involvement with the community and such. Also, it seems to be a trend that minorities (anyone who is not Caucasian) received these as well. Although your stats may be higher, these awards are not strictly merit based, and therefore, can be applied to a much broader range of students who may not be as academically inept as some are.

Mumur, did you receive any financial aid package from UCONN? Although you only received half tuition, you may receive many state grants (the ones I received nearly covered all of room and board). Anyways, whichever school you choose to attend, I wish you the best of luck there!
