Zoosermom, were you concerned your student would not be able to find work without the work study designation? We did not get work study, but have been advised there would be no issue getting work on campus even without work study. Any thoughts on that?

I can only speak for my daughter’s friends, and I can tell you that none of them had a job last year. Not one, and many looked. My D was incredibly fortunate to not only get a job, but to get one in her major (this is silly, but I was beside myself when I saw her name listed on the website with an official position in that department). I do believe there are jobs, but my perception is that they are pretty hard to come by unless a student is very aggressive and willing to take anything like dining hall service. I also think students should start looking as soon as they arrive on campus for the best chance. Have you considered asking for work study? They will often add it after being asked. My D didn’t have it awarded either year, but we asked nicely and it was awarded. She was told by her supervisor that the job is hers until she graduates as long as she has work study.

Ped1593- I saw from another of your posts that you had an SAT super score of 2070, ACT of 31, have a 3.4 unweighted GPA, and were in the International Baccalaureate program. I’m guessing with those stats you were also accepted into the honors program?

Regarding “community service” award, did you also have significant community service? What type of service was it?

Yep, Honors program. I did about 150 hours at the animal hospital, 150 at the library, and little volunteering things here and there. I also had a job throughout my senior year. Nothing too major, but I’ll take the money. Haha

My D is an IB diploma holder and I can tell you that UD loves IB.

Ped1593: Nothing to sneeze at. Congrats on your community service award. Well deserved.

Thank you! I’m very grateful for it.

@momof2giants I have exactly those stats… So I’m curious: how & when was your daughter notified, and did she apply before December 1st?
To anyone else who knows, are scholarships ONLY awarded to those who submit before Dec. 1st?
Thanks for the help.
My DS has a 2060 SAT (1450 CR +M), 3.18 UW GPA, 4.09 W GPA, no class rank, all Honors/5 AP curriculum from a very highly ranked public school in PA. He was offered the Provost Scholarship which is $5k per year. He did not apply for admissions to the Honors program.
also wondering if merit is given out equally, like if students who applied after dec. 1st will receive less, or if the school only has so much and will somehow run out and give less
@Cestlavie1919 I am almost positive that students that applied after Dec. 1 are NOT considered for merit scholarships.
UDel has always been a little low with the merit awards. I received $10000/yr OOS my sister who had extremely high stats a few years ago was only offered $13000/yr tuition still too expensive for OOS the need aid isn’t too good either.
UDs website clearly states that anyone who submits an application by January 15 will be considered for scholarships.
my D has a gpa of 3.74 with a combined SAT of 1890 and was just accepted a few days ago, what are the chances and how much merit money should we expect to receive?
@cooper0618 my D has a GPA of 4.0 uw and a combined SAT of 1840, ACT 27. The NPC calculated that she should get merit 8,000/yr, but she was awarded 5,000/yr. Makes it expensive for OOS, we told her that we would only consider colleges that fall at 35,000 or below per year. Her award would put her at 38,500, we were going to visit this weekend for Decision Day to check out the school if she got the 8,000 but now I’m unsure, she could fall in love with the campus!
Accepted into honors program and general engineering, 3.85 gpa from a hard school, lots of leadership/extracurriculars and 2190 SAT.
Received 3000 per year scholarship and was expecting far more. Does this seem low to anyone else and is there a way that I could get the Scholarship Committee to reconsider my merit amount? UD was my #1 school but I am now looking elsewhere because I never expected so little in scholarship.
@CinnamonSpice That seems really low. If you read up on this thread and threads from prior years, you will see other applicants with what appears to be lower stats who received more. Maybe they are coming to the end of scholarships and running low on funds? Only speculating…
@CinnamonSpice you are correct the merit aid you received is low. It could be that you applied after the Early Action deadline (if that was the case) and there is not aa much money allotted for merit aid remaining. Or it could be an instance of supply and demand. Engineering is a very much in demand major (and very competitive to get into) these days. And the best applicants often apply to that program. So it could be that Delaware does not need to offer more merit aid to attract top applicants to that program. Lastly another possibility could be lack of demonstrated interest or a fairly received feedback on your essay. For whatever reason I agree the merit aid offered to you is inadequate when compared to your stats and those of others who received more merit with lower stats.
That sounds very low. Are you sure it’s $3,000 a year and not $3,000 a semester? I think the largest amount they award as Presidential Scholarship is $10,000.
@CinnamonSpice your merit does sound low. Your stats aren’t much different than mine and I received $10000/yr OOS engineering. Did you have a rigorous schedule with alot of AP and Honors classes? If you are in-state that would explain why its lower though.
