Merit scholarships

I am glad the process that your son’s #1 school follows worked out for him and your family. Better or worse, I don’t know.

I like our scholarship decision process of waiting for the full class to be admitted, gathering all the pertinent information for a student at once (FAFSA is not required), and sending one letter that details all the awards given to meet the cost of the coming year. Three separate mailings to give the same information is not the Rose-Hulman personality (most likely stemming from the engineering mindset of maximizing process efficiency). But again, better or worse, I don’t know. Just different strokes for different folks.

got accepted early…in december…but still no FA package has come…in CA…what is the deal? have all the FA packages been sent and we dont get any FA???

galhbalh - I was accepted in October and I still haven’t gotten my financial aid package. What good does it do to get accepted so early if you don’t know if you will be able to afford to attend the school. They might as well send their acceptances out with their financial aid packages. This is quite disturbing.

All of my other early acceptances at least had the merit aid offer with the acceptance - even in December.

Also, why don’t they send out their financial aid packages all at one time?

I just got an e-mail wanting me to put down my deposit…

How can a person put down a deposit on something they don’t even know how much it costs?

Their merit aid better be huge. My other offers are looking really good right now.

@balhbalh, engineerfresh and senfresh,

I totally understand your frustration–this is the key step before making a decision. The sending of award letters will be completed this week. Let me know if you have any other questions.

All award letters have been mailed out!

Were they mailed on Wednesday or Thursday?

We are still waiting! Fingers crossed that a letter is in the mail to our national merit finalist. Rose is her top choice!

Still waiting - how long do I wait to call Rose?

I would call on Thursday if you haven’t received something.

It came! Daughter is pleased, as are we. I think she is packing her bags as I type this…

Awesome! Please let me know if there is anything I can provide as you get set for fall. Exciting times!

Hi, My son just got the scholarship offer from RHIT, it is purely merit scholarship, my question is, is it renewable every year or it is for one time deal? thank you for your information.

@superqq

All merit scholarships will be renewed each year so long as the student “maintains good academic standing.” Good academic standing is a 2.0 GPA or higher.

Will RHIT provide other merit scholarships or all of the scholarships will be issued this week, as you know, some colleges will “stack” multiple scholarships to one student. for example, some scholarships are issued by school level, some scholarships are issued by individual dept. We need to collect enough information to make a final decision. Thank you for your help.

@superqq

Sorry for the delay in responding. Everything has been calculated and sent out.

Is there any aid for international students. 50k a year is a lot for my family, My dad is already suffering stress… T.T Please, give me some advice…any international scholarship that I can apply for?

Ok I’ve read enough complaints LOL time to give everyone a reality check. It is widely known here in the Midwest that rose is a TOUGH AS NAILS school. I had personal friends from high school who went here with a PERFECT SAT score. They failed miserably because they simply didn’t know how to study.

Now, with that being said…smart gifted kids are a dime a dozen around this school…and there is a reason for that. So long story short…your smart kid is on equal footing with every other kid on campus.

Now, with those two things being said…here is a little bit of info about how financial aid works: if they know you have it, they are going to expect you to spend it. If you/your parents saved 50k for you to go to college then in their eyes you don’t need as much aid as a kid who has nothing…see my point yet? Every year its the same story…people get mad because the kids whose parents saved money for them to go to school get ticked over the aid…paired with middle class families that get ticked because they don’t have the money and yet their EFC says otherwise - these are the people who sort of have the right to be upset.

Now, with all of that being said:

Here in the Mid-West…if you have the words Rose-Hulman on your resume as the school giving you your degree…most jobs =yours. Why do you think Rose has 100% placement?

This is what you have to decide: is this school and the awesome education you are going to receive worth it to you? If there are better offers on the table then obviously you have a decision to make.

One final point - the education at rose is so top notch that I would dare say 100% of grad students get a full ride somewhere else because the school is so revered…and the caliber of students is just as good. So think about this if you are considering grad school - if you get into grad school with a full ride…the total amount you would pay for a BS, MS, and/or a doctorate would be how much compared to paying for the MS and the doctorate on crappy aid along with the loans from the BS.
