Method of Merit Aid Notification?

When can those accepted expect to hear about Merit Aid?

Will they be notified of this in their Status (on Rutgers website) or some other way?

If I’m not incorrect, I think you have to file for FAFSA first and then you will receive any merit aid.

[Rutgers: Office of Financial Aid](http://studentaid.rutgers.edu/scholar.asp)

Yes, after you file the FAFSA, you will be notified.

I don’t understand why Rutgers needs to see the FAFSA if it is truly merit aid.

According to an Associate Dean of the Pharmacy School, the Presidential Scholarships are awarded after December 15th this year.
To Quote from his email : “Merit awards are made by the central Admissions Office and they plan to starting notify students who qualify by the middle of December (which is actually earlier than usual). For any non-merit based assistance, that information would be based on the FAFSA that your parents would need to complete by Mar. 15, 2011. This would be for sources of aid administered by the Financial Aid Office. Those letters begin in mid-February for students who have a FAFSA on file.”

But Shamrock has a good question - How do the notify you? email or your status page?

My Daughter is waiting to hear in order to decide between Rutgers or Pitt. She already got full tuition scholarship at Pitt, but Rutgers was her first choice. Without the presidential scholarship, she goes to Pitt.

I believe the only true merit scholarship that Rutgers offers is the Presidential Scholarship. This is for $23,000 per year. $12,000 if the student lives off campus. The student must have at least a 2250 SAT in order to be considered. 2245 does not make the cutoff. It must be 2250 or better. Then they look at the students other stats.

All the other scholarships seem to be need-based. Then you must file the FAFSA.

According to the information line at NB campus, scholarship notifications are sent through the mail. This morning they indicated that the letters will go out the beginning of January through February. The notification date seems to change every time. I guess we will all know when we know!

mom2339

do u know if some one has more than 2250 will automatically be considered or they will look for other things too, if yes, then what are they: essays, GPA, course rigor, Subject SATs?

any ideas on this will be helpful

I would believe that they will look at all accepted students who have a minimum of 2250 SAT. They will naturally look at the essay submitted with the application, after that who is to say what they are looking for. How many scholarships they give out will depend on their finances. At this point all you can do is be patient and wait to see. Praying is never a bad idea…

very bummed they raised the Presidential to 2250 this year. I think last year it was 2100 or 2150, which my D has. I ‘suggested’ she study and re-take the SAT to get above the 2250 level and she laughed at me. (I wasn’t joking, as she barely touched the review books and scored nearly 2200). Same kid isn’t willing to hit her AP calc book in the spring to try for a 4 (she has 3 on AB & BC last year), to avoid what is said to be one of the worst freshman classes - it’s the only math class she will need for her major.

I’ve heard there is still some merit aid even if you don’t qualify for the Presidential.

Does anyone know if the Dec. 15 for merit aid will be for the SAS too or just pharmacy?

Because that’s like… now. O.o I’ve always expected a lot of merit aid based on previous classmates’ results (I’ve had higher stats than students in my school who got the Presidential scholarship), and I’m beginning to realize that might not happen.

Look for scholarship notification between Jan-April. Only those selected are notified via postal mail. No separate application is required.

That’s from their package they sent me once I was accepted. You should fill out the FAFSA by Feb 15, regardless of whether you got notified of any scholarships by then. Who knows, maybe waiting an extra month or two could result in you getting a few extra thousand :p

Scholarship notifications began today. My daughter received an email with a link to her scholarship info and she was awarded the Presidential Scholarship! Looks like she is Rutgers bound! Good Luck to all others who are waiting and Merry Christmas!

What is your D stats? Which school she apply for?

My D applied to the pharmacy school. Her SAT was 2280 and she is ranked 1 at her small high school. She also got full tuition at Pitt, but she has said Rutgers is her first choice, since it is a true 0-6 pharmacy school and much closer to home than Pitt. Now the choice is hers to make - I’m feeling red!

Congratulations! My D applied to SAS and Business scoool in NB. Her SAT was 2250 which is on the boarder line for Presidential Scholarship. She had 5.4W and 3.92 UW GPA on a very competitive public HS in NJ. I asked her to re-take SAT test but she didn’t want to since I knew she had not even taken any extra practices for preparation SAT test. I can do is just cross my fingers.

I got the Presidential scholarship today. Congrats to mom2339, and good luck to all!

Yay Rutgers presidential scholarship for me too! I applied in November (early action), so I think the decision may come later for students who applied in December or later.

proviso congrats! are they going by when one applied or is it by Last names

 • Any recipients in the higher alphabet last names ?
 • Or anyone who applied in Dec are recipients?
 • Or it is random with no method in the madness?

I applied late September with 2300 SAT but still haven’t gotten any news regarding scholarships.
