@acke0815 That is Awesome - Congrats ! Really great package for In State.
My gpa is a 3.44, which is .06 away from the minimum GPA of 3.5 for merit scholarships. my ACT is a 27, so it is in the range for their merit scholarships. Do you think I will still get considered for at least some merit aid?
HSgirlsenior, Based on the high caliber and quantity (over 30K) of apps they received this year, I think it unlikely unless you have some other big hook.
Can anyone help questions about class size? This might be the wrong thread, but my daughter is very concerned about class size. She was admitted USAP Law and Public Policy. We are from Texas and I just don’t know much about Miami. She was awarded good merit aid, but we haven’t visited. Trying to figure out how to decide whether this larger school would meet her needs. Any advice/info would be much appreciated!
@texasmissy i visited tons of schools and miamis teaching by far stood out the most. They are ranked #1 for their commitment to undergrad teaching(vanderbilt is behind them to put it in perspective). None of their classes are taught be TA s unlike other big schools and their faculty to staff ratio was very good. I don’t remember the average class size but that’s definitely something you can search on their website!
@HSgirlsenior I came here to tell say that I got accepted with a 27 ACT and a 3.0 GPA. My GPA my senior year is a 4.5 weighted and my junior year was a 3.5 ( I didn’t take any honors class). I had a bad GPA from Freshman/Sophomore year. I was able to get my ACT up to a 30 but I never sent it to them. Anywho about your scholarship question I had something amazing happen to me. I got a $13,300/yr with my crappy stats. This all balances out to like $53k over the 4 years. Based off their website that’s the highest level merit scholarship. I don’t even know how I got it. However, I can say it’s definitely not defined by that bracket.
@hsseniorgirl I’m instate also. So that’s basically a full tuition scholarship I’m visiting this coming Thursday for the first time haha!
@synful122, congrats! does that amount include your financial aid award?
@BubbleGirl90 Nope that’s just straight merit.
Has anyone seen a deferral thread or regular decision thread from past years? Just curious about how the stats have turned out for those in the past with regular decision or deferrals…
If you consider being asian as a hook. But I feel that it is an “anti-hook” @BubbleGirl90
Actually, @lus174, I think you may be on to something. Unlike at an Ivy League school or other top universities, Miami is lacking in diversity and maybe they are wanting to break their JCrew stereotype. It would be interesting to know the ethnicities of the ones that got the really great offers. You have great stats so you should be proud!
@lus174, being Asian is definitely a hook at Miami! They are very focused on increasing diversity, and are trying to give more merit to diverse U.S. students since their international apps are down this year. At schools with a large percentage of Asian students, it can sometimes be an anti-hook though.
@BubbleGirl90 My friend who is dating a girl at Miami has told me the opposite. I told him about my scholarship, I’m mixed (black and white), and legit the first thing he said to me was. “There are a ton of Asians there.” Don’t worry he’s not racist or anything lol. He told me that before anything else. So IDK. He does have a lot of first person experience there.
@Synful122, if you are interested in the actual enrollment for 2016-17 broken down by race/ethnicity, you can look at the Common Data Set for Miami. Out of 16,981 total undergrads, 12,470 of them are white/non-Hispanic so unfortunately Miami is not very diverse, and luckily they are heavily recruiting non-white students. Only 361 students are Asian non-Hispanic so .02% of the total population. 555 students are mixed/2 or more races, 521 African-American, 681 Hispanic, 35 American Indian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 74 race unknown. There are also 2,279 international students/non-resident aliens (anecdotally, I have heard that most of the international students are from China). They have a long way to go, but the diversity is increasing and providing generous merit aid to encourage more enrollment by non-white students is a good thing.
@ acke0185, did you have a hook?
Are there any international / OOS students here who got >30,000$ in merit money? (Per year)
Found out my OOS Daughter was accepted on February 1st but after six weeks, we have still not received a Financial Aid letter (even with filing our FAFSA by December 1st)…too bad because they did a good job selling their piece of paper on Admitted Students Day…is this school worth $15,000-$17,000 more than other colleges ??? $47,000 for OOS Tuition ??? Looks like Miami is probably OFF our list…
Well, what a stinky process Miami University has been. Daughter has been accepted to 12 other schools, most within a week or two. Financial award letters litter our kitchen table. Some of these schools are really tough to get into and she breezed right in! Money from a couple of them make me thankful that she has worked so hard! Miami? Dud. She applied EA and received a deferral letter. March 15th arrives and she was then put on the wait list or accepted to their Pathways program and can transfer into the main campus in the spring. Don’t think so! Not sure what they are looking for. But it must be out of state minority students because she is a minority and was skipped right over. Oh well! Their loss. Going to move onto one of the other 12 schools that actually WANT her! Hopefully she chooses the one a little easy on our checkbook!
In a similar position here - our OOS kid loved Miami and after her visit, could have easily seen herself there, but after all of these many weeks without any notice re: financial stuff, her enthusiasm has dampened, and she is much more strongly considering other options. It is harder and harder to justify the greater expense of this school over the several others that have been more forthcoming.
