Miami University EA Class of 2022

@JMRome @STF4717 Thanks for the detailed response. We plan on working this out today, now that we have our numbers.
I really appreciate it.

@CWAE182025 You’re welcome and good luck! Let us know how it works out for you!

Son got accepted and got his merit. He’s in state. Thought it was quite generous which makes this school a strong option and very affordable.

My D"s letter finally arrived. She got $12k year. She is OOS, has a 3.93UW GPA, 30 ACT (SS), 6 or 7 APS, sports and ECs etc. We would have been doing a jig for a little higher number, but from reading the thread, it seems to correlate with figures/stats others have posted. It does appear the test score weighed heavier than academic record/GPA in awarding merit, and testing was definitely my D’s Achilles heel. Glad for what she did get, and now have a lot to mull over.
Congrats to all!

OOS D just received merit letter. While nice, we expected more based upon her qualifications and what we read in literature. While a nice offer, other schools set the bar a bit higher. She loves Miami and would love to attend.

How do we best negotiate additional merit? Should she write a letter and lay out her offers to date? Should we, as parents, write a letter or call direct? First child heading to college so we want to do this correctly. Any advice would be great!

OOS. 3.95 GPA, 1420 SAT, 60+ dual enrolment credits. $23,000 merit aid in college of engineering. More than I thought so I am now giving Miami a lot of thought.

Go back a page and look at @JMRome 's explanation in post #176- tells you exactly how to do that!

DD received 17,000 (in state) and was accepted to the Academic Scholars Program. She is pre-med right now but isnt certain, so I would have preferred the honors program. That said, the $2000 UASP scholarship is nice. Does anyone know the UASP scholarship is included in the merit scholarship award we just received in the mail? It wasn’t clear. Her stats are ACT 36, 4.0 unweighted GPA, 9 AP’s, Varsity 3 season athlete, captain, national writing award, national merit semi finalist.

@2manycollegequestions4me my impression is that the UASP is included. Would love to be wrong though–anyone else?

My daughter’s letter stated that “This award also reflects your selection for the University Academic Scholars Program.” I think it is included in the merit amount.

@MommyCoqui That’s strange… my daughter’s letter doesn’t say that. @Booajo did your son’s leave it out of your letter too?

I can’t find his letter to check–I looked! Maybe he actually took it to his room rather than leaving it sitting around? I know it said something like “the money is AT LEAST xxx, and may include several types of scholarship”. He is a “global scholar”–no idea if that matters.

Wanted to chime in on the scholars program and majors. The scholars program is very flexible. Students are permitted to change majors, even to one that is not part of the scholars program, and still keep their scholars merit money. Just a tidbit we learned at orientation last year that might help your students with decision making.

@Violinviolamom Thank you for sharing that piece of information. While it doesn’t apply to my S’s situation, it is still a nice tidbit to know! Can you also speak to how your D finds Honors? Does she live in the Honors dorm? I’m just wondering if the party school reputation spills over to the Honors students? Or if it does, to what extent? Thanks!

@OriginalSmother My D is enjoying the honors program. She found her first honors class to be interesting and challenging. She has a short internship over Jterm that will count as an honors experience and will take a second honors class in the spring. I don’t think she will have any issues fulfilling the honors requirements. She does live in one of the honors dorms which she really likes. It has extended quiet hours and while there are students who party, it does seem to be a good choice for those who prefer a more studious environment. I don’t have students at other colleges so I can’t compare, but there is definitely lots of partying at Miami. That said, there is also a lot to do for those students who are not into the party scene. ‘Late Night Miami’ has great and free programming Thursday-Saturday that both of my Ds have explored and really enjoyed. They have also found many like-minded students and have not felt pressured to drink.

@Violinviolamom Thank you! It’s good to hear that there are other like minded students to be found and that the honors program is enjoyable. Not worried about S making poor decisions- just nervous about that initial “finding my tribe” adjustment period. Thanks again!

I also got in! However, I was wondering when I get merit aid information? Do I have to submit the FAFSA first?

@caralhoman Congratulations - no, you do not need to submit the FAFSA to get merit aid. We got the merit aid letter in the mail about a week after the online acceptance. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the information @STF4717! I got my acceptance mailed to me; however, there was no scholarship information on it! And I don’t want to sound overconfident but I feel that I would have gotten at least some aid, since I got a SAT of 1400+.

@caralhoman - The acceptance package will come and then a regular sized letter from financial aid will come about a week later.
