My S has been accepted to Miami, Elon and Furman. He is interested in pursuing business. He received a merit scholarship from Miami of $11K per year for four years. Have not heard from Elon or Furman re: scholarship money, yet. Does anyone have any thoughs re: strengths/weaknesses of any/all of these schools? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
The farmer school is quite a good business school. I think elon is pretty good also. Furman would come in at number 3 from my perspective, for business, but I hear it’s a wonderful school. My son received quite a nice merit award from Miami, and it was close, but he wound up picking University of Maryland / The Smith School. I’m still mourning him not going to Farmer. Suggest you visit all that are serious contenders.
Cannot speak to Furman, but was very impressed with Elon. It was my daughter’s top choice, but as a small private school without a significant endowment, they seem to struggle filling the gap between their high COA and a parent’s EFC without a lot of loans. I would recommend sending them a copy of Miami’s initial merit aid offer. I think that helped generate a much more generous merit aid offer from Elon than we expected, which made the final decision a tough one, but with MU offering full-tuition merit aid, that’s where my daughter landed. Fortunately, no regrets; she loves MU.
I’m from North Carolina and I’m a freshman here at Miami! If he wants to pursue business, I would say Miami is the best choice without a doubt. The Farmer School of Business here is phenomenal and opens so many doors for it’s students (I’m not even a business student and I know how amazing it is). But, it is a little difficult to get into. If he wants to pursue that and hasn’t gotten directly admitted into it, then tell him to really focus on his grades first semester, and don’t overdo it with classes. They don’t care what classes you take, they care what your GPA is. Elon is really similar to Miami and I’m not sure what it’s business reputation is like (probably not a good thing, seeing as I’m from NC and haven’t heard anything). Furman is a good school as far as I know, but it’s completely different than Miami. If he’s between these 2 I think he needs to look at all the factors and decide what he likes better. One is big, one is small. Also public vs. private, etc. All 3 are good schools so he really can’t go wrong! Good luck!
