Michigan Promise Award Questions

Like every other instate going to UofM, I was awarded the Michigan Promise Scholarship. I have a few questions about it though. How much is it exactly? Also, how is it distributed between the years and usually when does it get added into my student account?

Thanks

It’s $4000. First year you apply to get it you get $1000. The second year you get another $1000. Then finally you get $2000.

But umm…you know it’s about to be cut out of the states budget right? Just pray the House votes against cutting it

Yeah I also qualify for the MPA, though I’ve heard it will be zap from the budget.

Yeah I realize that. But would it affect those who were already promised the $4,000? Shouldn’t it only affect those who apply for it after they pass the legislation?

NOPE, it affects EVERYBODY. Which is the part I have a serious problem with. I made my college plans with the understanding that I’d have that money-- because I was awarded it. To some people maybe it’s of little consequence, but certainly not for me.

oh wow… thats ****ed up…

I know right? Michigan “Promise” my @ss

send an email to your representative, it’s pretty much all you can do at this point

lol it definitely shouldn’t have been cut without prior notice [before college applications]. They really should finish up their promise to us before they ax it.

Yeah, we all took the tests and now we’re not going to get money? Sucks.

Hi guys. I sent a letter to Granholm’s office about this very topic, as my s. has to come up with another $500 before Aug. 31 now b/c it’s still on as a loan and fin aid can’t change it until after the state’s budget sessions.
Her assistant wrote me back yesterday and quoted Granhom as saying she would not allow it to be cut. —For what it’s worth. Either way, you have to make sure you’re covered for Aug. 31st folks.

Tell your representatives too! All of you + your parents = 3 votes each!

FYI, a physical letter or a phone call will have more impact than an email.

This is probably a stupid question…but are we talking about the money awarded to students who do well on the Michigan Merit Exam?

Yes, we are.

Michigan Merit Exam or MEAP if you are older, I think my class was the last one to take the MEAP.

I have been sending letters every two days or so and an email here and there. :stuck_out_tongue: I’m pretty sure this was Granholm’s baby to begin with if memory serves so I trust her to stand up for us as long as she feels she can. Hopefully that’ll be enough. The first $2,000 were a BIG help, but I’d signed up at Michigan with the understanding I’d have the next $2,000 and under no circumstances should scholarships already awarded be taken away, that’s just plain immoral. I earned that money and was told I’d have it, there was no fine print saying, “oh, by the way, we might decide to cut the program halfway through your education… enjoy!”

Anyone know what kind of scores you need to receive the money (assuming it doesn’t get canceled of course)? I’m worried I won’t get the money because my ACT score was kind of low when I took it back then for my first time.

Edit: Never mind, I made it! :D

What does the ACT have to do with it?

they changed from the meap to now it is just the ACT. But i think you have to have above a 2.5 gpa in hs to get it. If you go to UM you for sure will have it.

The MME is a combination of 3 tests including the ACT.
