Hey everyone,

So I did poorly in freshman year, fine in sophomore year and horribly in junior year. As it now stands, my GPA is a 2.7778. I failed my first semester of chemistry in my junior year and I'm going to retake the first semester next year, along with physics. I dropped the class after the first semester.

Some good things, perhaps:

1) 30 on ACT, 10 on writing
2) First-generation college student
3) Tested out of U.S. history (sophomore year class) and took AP Micro/Macro a year early. I also took AP Gov and AP English Lit.
4) Thirty hours of community service (I know that's not a lot to many)
5) Worked at McDonald's from October 2012 to June 2013, took another job last week at a wedding banquet hall as a dishwasher. Better pay, hours, etc.

If you need any more details, just ask. And if you're from Michigan, could you possibly chance me on Western/Central? And maybe GVSU? Thank you!

I’m Michigan kid from GR. When the MSU rep came to talk to our interested students, he said a 3.0 and a 24-25 ACT was pretty safe for most as far as acceptance. I think your ACT would be a sign to them that you have potential above what your grade point shows, as well as a few AP classes provided you scored well on the tests.

I agree that a 3.0 is typically a solid GPA for a lot of state universities. However, with your great ACT score, you might have better luck.

I’d say that MSU and WMU might be possible but not guaranteed, (especially MSU since a lot of U of M-worthy applicants also apply), but I’d say that GVSU is fairly in reach and that CMU might be a good bet.

Also, I’d check out Oakland University. They’ve been known to admit some 2.5 GPA students if they have a really good ACT score and show potential. Wayne is of similar caliber and might be a good chance, too.

Good luck!!

Thanks for the response, guys! I just finished up with mathematics in summer school (to bring a non-failing grade up) and it brought me to a 2.98 or so.

And thank you for the recommendation harvestmoon. I’ve been a little suspicious of Oakland just because it doesn’t seem as well-known in Michigan-Wayne seems to be the best ‘small’ public school in Mich.

Also, I got a 3 on Micro/Macro, a 4 on AP Gov and I totally bombed the AP English test, receiving a 2.

If you can get your GPA above 3.0, I think you will get into the schools that you apply to, depending on when you apply. Some schools where it might be iffy would be MSU and GVSU, but I think you have a decent shot at each if you’re near or above a 3.0.
