S22 is trying to decide between University of Michigan and USC for engineering. He is interested in mechanical engineering and may want to minor in business. He is an international student and will be full pay at Michigan, while USC has given him the Presidential Scholarship (50% tuition). Says weather is not a dealbreaker, but has a preference for smaller classes and classes that are not TA-run. We will not have the opportunity to visit either school before committing to one, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Michigan has a great engineering school definitely better than USC. The tuition part is tempting… it really depends on where he wants to go!
Michigan is better but your student will go home. I imagine the USC name will carry weight at home.
It looks like you need to apply for bus minor at Ross vs simply have a GPA met at USC. Check into that.
Michigan stronger reputationally at least. But again the student will go home. Both are fine and money (and weather) matter.
Good luck.
My DD is currently 2nd year student at USC in Mechanical Engineering major. For international student, I would recommend USC. It is well known internationally, has great diversity in student body, nice weather with lots of fun activities to do. Because of smaller undergraduate student body, it is much easier to get research job, get to know professors, get a job or participate in networking opportunities. Students and staff do help each other especially in job referral or job placement. You are almost guaranteed to have great food to eat while you are there and great career after graduation. Just my 2 cents.
Thank you! Good to hear that your DD is enjoying it.
Does she live on-campus? Do you know if it’s difficult to get on-campus housing for all four years?
USC guarantees on campus housing for two years. Some juniors live in off campus university owned housing.
Thanks! Yes, the tuition is tempting for sure! But it’s also hard to pass up the opportunity to attend Michigan.
Thank you! Very helpful about the business minor - it does look like you have to apply for it at Michigan.
Thank you!
