Definitely go cheap. Things will be blowing up and burning in the microwave. Get a $25 one from walmart, and if something truly nasty happens to it (my last roommate left a can of open soup in the microwave for a week while I was gone) you won't feel so terrible about chucking it and getting a new one.

A lot of schools don't allow them in dorm rooms because many dorms were built pre-1975 and so don't have electric systems that can handle a microwave along with computers and all the other things they have to now.

Dont get an expensive one since those are definitely over the wattage limit. Most colleges that allow microwaves allow 700watt ones...aka the cheapest.

Pay attention to what wattage your dorm allows like lixuelai said.. most places limit it to 800, 700, 600 or less.. so basically that makes you get the cheapest $30-50 microwave because everything else has too many watts

Check with your school because at most schools microwaves and halogen lamps are amongst the list of things they tell you to leave at home as they are usually not allowed in the rooms.

In addition depending on how the dorms are set up, some dorms have comon spaces with mini kitchens that have microwaves.

Get the cheap ones. That way if it gets damage it isnt as big of a deal. If you are getting a micro/mini fridge, see if you can get a microwave/minifridge combo, as this can save you money.
