Mid-Term Reports/Tears, cheers, jeers and fears

Having a D who just recently graduated (this year) with a BS in a science and will be attending grad school next year she knew grades would be important for said grad school. However, in the interim she put together her resume and was job hunting, using headhunters. She was contacted quickly, interviewed and hired within the week for a biotech research firm. Each and every interview (phone and in person) requested her transcript. Not just the GPA but her actual transcript, firms numbered at least 10.

Her transcript was also reviewed for her on-campus internship research positions during her years at the 4 year uni. Profs and researchers were granted access for all those applying for the postions and the grades played a large part (if not all) in who received the research positions and who didn't. So even if she had not planned on grad school her transcript came into play even before graduation and very much so after. And surprisingly the research she is now doing requires a govt. security clearance so the things she did while in college also came into play! Didn't even think about that one.

Wow, things have really changed from our college days. I just listed my GPA on my transcript but no one ever asked to see a copy of my college or grad school transcript!

Wow, I am surprised by how some employers screen candidates. My D puts so much pressure on herself and holds herself to such high standards that I find myself telling her not to worry about grades, etc. I know they will matter for grad school (and apparently for some job markets) but I also know she is working her !@$ off and doing the best she can. Why add to that stress - I am trying to counter it.

I'm with you, movinmom. DS is really working like there's no tomorrow, and all he can say about it is " I think I am going be fine, mom".He has always been a hard worker and a little too hard on himself so I try to remind him all the time that all he can do is his best and pray a lot! I told him to look at schools where he can set the curve when he was looking, but did he listen? Oh well. Needless to say, he is overworked and happy.

I don't hold a whole lot of stock in midterm grades. Here, anyway, they're usually just ONE test grade (or maybe two). It always seems that there's at least twice the amount of graded work in the second half of the semester...
