So I took Spanish 1 and 2 (7th and 8th grade respectively) and got a B in it. I’ve picked up Spanish 2 my sophomore year and plan to finish Spanish 4 my senior year. I really want to have the 4 years of spanish on my transcript. My question is: Do I need to include the 1 year (credit worth)of Spanish I took in middle school on my transcript (and the grade I got) or will they simply count taking spanish 4 as 4 years of spanish (spanish 3 as 3 years etc.)
Most colleges will see completion of Spanish 4 as “4 years”. If you are concerned about a specific college, ask directly.
At most high schools, the student does not have an option of what to include or not include on the transcript. Regardless, @ucbalumnus is correct - for basically every college, completing level 4 - = 4 years.
@skieurope So they don’t need to see my middle school foreign language (or won’t put that grade into my high school GPA even if my HS included it)?
P.S- Thanks for the quick response!
Even if the grade is on your HS transcript, a B in middle school won’t have any negative impact at any school.
@momofsenior1 It might not be much in the grand scheme of things, but would it still affect my H.S unweighted GPA if my H.S were to include foreign language from 8th grade?
Depends upon the high school. Some might include 8th grade HS courses in the GPA; others don’t. My HS listed the courses but no grades on the transcript.
Regardless, the impact of one B on a HS GPA is akin to a pimple on an elephant’s butt.
That is up to your HS how they handle high school level courses taken in middle school. Talk to your guidance counselor.
If your HS reports grades for HS credit taken during middle school on your transcript, then the colleges will see it as part of your GPA. It will depend on the individual college on if they decide to use it when considering your admissions GPA.
@skieurope Should I ask my H.S counselor whether it will be on my transcript and whether I could remove it if the level of foreign language=total number of years taken
Yes, because none of us knows what your school does.
You can ask, but as I said before, it is rare that the student gets to decide what is included on the transcript or not. At the end of the day, though, if it is included on the HS transcript, if a college rejects you, it will not be because your got a B in MS.
It would be highly unlikely that a school would change it’s policy for one student. Again, a B in middle school is not going to impact your overall HS GPA enough to matter. You are spending emotional energy over this for nothing.
Thanks for the feedback. I’ll just ask my counselor if I can see my transcript.
My sons’ school system included high school classes taken in middle school on the transcript and in the GPA. This included math and foreign language courses for them. They didn’t give honors credit for courses taken at an accelerated pace, either (ie, Alg I or geometry in 6th or 7th grade). For one of my sons, this was six full-year courses taken in MS.
There’s no hard and fast rule here. Ask your HS counselor.
