I'm from the Chicago area and would like to stay in the Midwest region for my school selection. I also would prefer to attend a public state school, wanting to get the typical college experience and a well-rounded education, but still being able to get a good theatre education (applying for Design and Production). Here are some state schools I've applied to:

University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
Illinois State University
Indiana University

Does anyone have any other recommendations? BFA is preferred.
Thanks :)

I looked at UMinn, but it seems they only offer the BFA for acting, not tech. I do know it has a BA in theatre arts in general, if I decided I wanted a broader theatre education, but I think I am geared more towards to design and production.

Thanks for your input! I’ll check out Temple U.

Oh 'duh! Sorry, I did not read very carefully and see everything through the acting lens (although even actors should be able to do tech!!). Good luck!

In Wisconsin, I would look at BFA programs at Viterbo (in LaCrosse) and UW-Stevens Point. They both have BFAs in Tech/Design. At UW-Milwaukee, you start in BA and can audition for BFA later on (I presume it’s a portfolio, etc. for Design). UW-LaCrosse has a BA in Theatre Arts that is not auditioned, but we know many students who have gone there and had tremendous experiences.

Ah! perfect question. Im a musical theatre major at Ball State University in Muncie Indiana. Its a BFA but you still get the “real college kid” experience with the size of the university and the core classes you have to take. Its a very strong and competitive program. They do go to the unifieds in Chicago, and coming here was the best choice I’ve ever made. If you arent auditioning for performance option, they have pretty much every aspect of theatre covered with various majors. I’d definitely look into it. We have zillions of people from chicago.

Just to follow up on what JakeRoku said, Ball State does not in fact have a BFA in Design and Tech, but a very strong program nonetheless. I am very happy with program and have heard the same from everyone I know in the Design and Tech option!

check out Northern Illinois University. I know you said public university but DePaul has a good tech theater program and I think they have scholarships
