OK so I am a senior this year, and my semester and midterm grades (included in midyear reports) are not that great =[.

For the past three years, I have been getting straight A's every year, every marking period, so coming into senior year I had a 4.0. My course load the past three years is the highest possible courses I could take: all the APs and honors I could take I took and aced.

This year I took all APs, because I was continuing with my "take the highest class possible" plan.
AP PHYSICS
AP ENGLISH LIT
AP SPANISH
AP CALC AB
AP CALC BC
AP EUROPEAN HISTORY

For the first two marking periods, I got all A's but two B's in Physics and Eng. For midterms I got a C for physics. I'm wondering if I still have a chance to get into schools like Upenn, Columbia, NYU with this horrible midyear report. I feel like it shows that im slacking, but truly I'm working harder than i ever have before.

i mean midterms as in midterm exams, and there is nothing I can do to change my midyear report results, which is the main thing that colleges see for senior year. Do you think I will be able to get into colleges like Upenn, Columbia and NYU with my first semester grades and midterm exam grades?

Grades aren’t the ONLY things that matter. That being said, a C in physics does not seem too terrible. Is that your final grade in your classes? A C in physics and a B in English? If so, I wouldn’t stress too much. Plus, I mentioned this guy in a different thread, but this guy I know who got accepted to Stanford. He got a 2 on his APUSH exam and a C in AP Literature first semester of senior year. Don’t stress too much ;)

And I’d would have to know the rest of your stats to determine if you could get into Columnia, UPenn, NYU… like SAT/ACTs? Extracurriculars? All that?

yeah, a C will definitely hurt, but maybe they’ll understand about senioritis and all that. you never know

don’t feel too bad. i’m in the same boat. i took all the hard ap classes this year and it looks like i’m going to have a 3.5 for the semester - b’s all in my math/science classes. and my situation’s worse than your’s. i had a really nice upward curve until now…
just hope the colleges will end up losing your midyear report or something xD

but i have a question - my school doesn’t do midterm grades so are they the same as semester grades? cuz i think only semester grades count.

and you shouldn’t have a problem getting into nyu at least :)

All of the classes I have listed above are full year classes apart from BC Calculus, which i take next semester. By saying semester grades, I mean the grades for the first two marking periods out of a total of 4 marking periods. Midterm exams is where i got the C in physics, not an actual marking period grade.

I think Columbia, U Penn, and NYU are a bit of a stretch before this, unless you were a significant officer in several of those clubs. Your test scores are fine, but not spectacular. Don’t give up hope though! I would include a cover letter when you send in your grades if possible (maybe your counselor would write a letter too?), explaining (not excusing) and taking responsibility for the grades. I think it could only help. Do you have some safer schools too though?

do they even get to see your midterm exams? i don’t know about your school but in mine, the transcript only shows our semester grades. and no, i think you’re right, they’re not going to forgive senioritis. if it makes you feel any better, i’m taking ap physics too and i’m not doing so well either.
however, i think your sat scores are a bit on the low side for columbia and upenn. but i’m pretty sure you’re in for nyu.
oh well, you never know :)
