<p>No. Being in the military does not guarantee admissions to any school. However, it certainly helps! And, a lot of military programs pay for your undergraduate education. If that’s something you would do, it’s not a bad idea. </p>

<p>Definitely untrue, but serving some time in the military before heading off to college can be a pretty good idea if you’re stuck in a rough financial situation. The G.I. bill is nothing to sneeze at.</p>
<p>tell your friend that selective schools have no miliitary “set-asides”. If that were the case, how would he explain the higher than avg unemployment rate among returning veterans? If any college door was wide open for them, they wouldn’t be looking for work. Your friend is seriously mis informed. (I work for the DoD)</p>
<p>Being a veteran can be a very strong soft factor, but it’s still only a soft factor. You’re applying to an academic program; being awesome in non-academic areas can only go so far.</p>
