Minnesota or Ohio

Hi guys, I got in into the CSE in Minnesota as a transfer student, majoring in Computer Engineering. At the same time, I also got admitted into the Ohio State University. I am confused on which one to choose for my major. Does anybody have any advice on which one to go for ? Need to save my seat by May 1st

While I’m a MN fan. I would say both are compatible academically and campus life wise. Have you visited both? Do you have a cost differential?

@wayneandgarth nope, I haven’t visited both campuses, I just knew them based on what I see from their website. And I don’t have a cost differential. From what I have heard, Minneapolis is a way better city than Columbus. The only thing that concern me is the extreme weather that they have. However, some of my friends said that Ohio has a better engineering department. I am really confused on which one to go right now and I have to save my seat by May 1st.

Well, Minneapolis is more cosmopolitan than Columbus and has 18 Fortune 500 companies including engineering giants such as 3M, Homeywell and Medtronic. Great for internships. OSU and MN are definitely peers in Engineering.

You really need to quickly understand your cost for each.

OSU and Minnesota are pretty much on par. Academically, there isn’t more than a dime’s worth of difference.

The Twin Cities (you get Minneapolis AND St.Paul) is larger than Columbus, roughly 3.5 million to 2 million people. That equates to more businesses (18 Fortune 500 companies to 5), more entertainment options (4 professional sports teams to 1, more theaters and museums as well).

Both campuses are close to their metro areas, and served by public transportation, so I view that as a wash.

Against the community size, you have the weather. Yeah, it gets cold, but our campus is set up to handle it and students get through just fine. Plus, it’s not as if Columbus is that far south as to not get it’s own share of winter.

From your other posts, I see you’re an international student currently in Washington state. Culturally, Minnesota is closer to the feel of Seattle than Columbus- if that has any impact on your thinking. The Twin Cities and Minnesota campus are more liberal, where OSU and Columbus is more middle of the road.

Good luck with your decision! You don’t have a bad choice, truly.

I totally agree, having lived in Seattle for ten years and Columbus for eight; plus friends in Twin Cities. Both Minnesota and Seattle have a Scandinavian progressive attitude. Columbus is middle America, period.
