Minor in Accounting or Mathematics?

Which one provides more opportunities overall? I heard a minor in math would look more impressive especially in finance.

Also, is it a requirement to have an accounting minor for the big 4?

Accounting minor isn’t a requirement, but it looks better. As long as you are pursuing the classes to get the CPA, the Big4 will like you. It’s just that having the minor looks better.

With the minor in accounting, you will be someone the big accounting companies will try to recruit. I’m not sure about the math minor though. Someone else with that can speak about what companies look for that.

sorry but what are the Big4?

pwc, kpmg, e&y, and deloitte

thanks a lot

if you want to be a CPA, do the accounting minor since CPA’s do accounting.

Do you think a Big 4 company would hire someone with an English major and accounting minor?

Yes, they would. I believe I know some, but I cant recall them (aka I’ve met them at recruiting events).

The only issue is getting your units required to sit for the CPA exam. You need business units which come from the following categories:

Business-related subjects include:
Business Law
Business Administration
Business Communications
Business Management
Computer Science/Info Systems
Economics
Finance
Marketing
Mathematics
Statistics

I’ve met global studies majors, history majors, etc. They accept anyone that has the accounting units.

Where do you get the units for classes like marketing and biz communication? UCLA doesn’t offer many business related classes aside from a few finance/accounting classes.

The CPA requirements are not UCLA specific. That list I provided is what the CPA board counts when determining whether or not you are ready to sit for the CPA. You can get those courses anywhere, CC, summer school somewhere else, etc.

Absolutely, as long as your GPA/Experience/Extracurriculars are impressive.

For the business-related courses requirement, you don’t need every class from that list. You only need 36 quarter-units of any kind of class (or combo of classes) from that list, for example 36 units of econ, or 28 units of econ and 8 units of math, or 32 units of comp sci and 4 units of business law, etc.
