MIS VS Ops/Supply Chain Management

I’ve been set on being an operations and supply chain management (OSCM) major. Problem is the courses I THOUGHT would be available this spring are not so if I want to keep this major it will take an extra semester. I could finish faster if I major in Management Information Systems.

I am currently working as a full time inventory controller/data analyst for a fortune 50. I would like to stay in the supply chain management field and specialize as a higher up supply chain analyst thats more into planning guy. If I major in MIS and possibly combine that with an APICS CPIM certification and my experience… would that be enough to show I’m serious about the field or would it be better for OSCM. Does this even matter at all?

I’m not sure about MIS and certs so I’m leaning Supply Chain right now. In that one extra semester I think I might even could double major in both if I max my credits. I’m already set for a promotion with either choice into a QA or Ops manager role. I’m thinking long term potential. Maybe wear a suit, fly a desk, point at charts, corporate type gigs 10 years down the road. And again… does it even matter?

So MIS and APICS certifications VS OSCM/MIS double

Tried to respond earlier, not sure what happened. Will try to recall my thoughts for you to consider:

  1. Do you know with certainty that the SCM classes you needed are offered in the fall? Some schools offer certain classes only every year. If that's the case here, you might need an extra year not just an extra semester if they aren't offered until next spring.
  2. Taking an extra semester (or year) to get a single degree when you could get one in 4 years typically is not worth the extra cost. Sometimes it is unavoidable. And maybe your situation is different since you are already employed. But something to consider.
  3. Do you know whether your employer requires a SCM degree for the positions you want? They might want that, or they might just want a degree (or a degree that is close enough). If they require a SCM then you have your answer. But if not then see points 1 and 2 to make a decision if MIS/certs is sufficient. Recommend you speak with your manager, the manager that hires the positions you want (even if no opening right now) and/or an HR rep to find what they want for those positions.

Good luck
