Missing 1 Prerequisite - Is There Still a Chance?

For UCLA, I will be missing one class for the prerequisites of civil engineering. Is it worth a shot to apply or do I have zero chance of getting in?

This says “Applicants to the Henry Samueli School of Engineering & Applied Science must have a minimum 3.3 GPA at the time of application to be considered for admission and by the time of entrance must have attained junior standing (60 semester/90 quarter units) and completed preparation for the selected major”

https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/seasmajs.htm

So that’s a no? Shucks.

Sorry :frowning: Is there any way you could fit in your missing class?

Maybe I could do it during summer, but all UCs want the prerequisites done by the spring before you transfer. It’s no biggie, it would just be an added bonus.

Do you work in the UCLA’s admission office by the way?

If you have the money for the app, why not try? The worse they will do is not accept you, and you can apply next cycle with everything complete.

I don’t, I’m actually a CC student applying this cycle!

What is it that is preventing you from finishing that last prerequisite?

ignore the previous posts… the rule of thumb for Samueli School of Engineering is that 3 strikes and your out. This I heard from a Samuel Rep… now keep in mind that these are 3 UCLA classes… so missing Calc 3 (Multivariable) counts as 2 strikes because at UCLA you take them in 2 quarters (Math 32AB)

Where is the source for that?

@luckie1367 The source was a Samueli Transfer Rep… the only thing I’m not 100% sure is if its 3 strikes you are out or if they will accept 3 missing classes (meaning 4 strikes you are out)…

the other automatic denials are:

not having a 3.3 GPA overall (well known fact)
not having a 3.5 GPA in major preparation (not as well known fact)

@Dagoberto‌ I’m not sure it would count as two strikes because it’s only one class at CCC, but I do not know. They won’t accept summer, pretty sure on that. Have you already done Calc 2? Could you find Calc 3 online or winter session for Calc 2 if that is needed first, followed by Calc 3. Have you checked extension online courses?

It may depend on whether the missing prerequisite is something common like math or physics, or an uncommon course that does not exist at many (or any) CCs.

@lindyk8‌ not taking Calculus 3 counts as 2 strikes, because from UCLA’s POV you would be missing both Math 32A & Math 32B… regardless how many classes it takes to fulfill at a community college

alternatively, some community classes offer Linear Algebra & Differential Equations in one semester (For ex: Math 260 at Santa Barbara Community College), so missing that class would also count as 2 strikes (Math 33A & Math 33B)

Ah Thx for clarification @Dagoberto‌
