Hi,
I was in LSA for my first year at umich and plan to apply to the CoE for winter semester this coming year. On the engineering website, these are listed as the prerequisites for admissions:

Calculus: MATH 115 and MATH 116
Physics: PHY 140 and PHY 141
Chemistry: CHEM 130/125L/126L or CHEM 210/211L
Computing: ENGR 101 or EECS 183
English

By the time I complete fall semester, I'll have most of these pre-reqs in. As of now my schedule consists of EECS 183, Calc 3, Latin 231 and Anthropology 101. I suppose I could drop the last two since I plan to leave LSA anyway. Would eecs, calc, physics, and ideally one other class in one semester be do-able? Or would they consider an applicant who is missing a pre-req?

I can’t speak for physics and calc 3, but i can tell you from firsthand experience eecs 183 isn’t a hard class if you’re a decent student. From what I’ve noticed, physics exams can be a bit brutal after the first one. I remember an entire lounge in bursley being filled with engineering students studying for one of the exams the night before this past winter semester.

It also kinda depends on what department you’re transferring in. You have a bit of leeway if it’s one of those that don’t require too high of GPA (EE/CE/CS), but if it’s ChemE or BME then you might have a rough semester ahead of you.

Keep in mind that later on in your college career you’ll have to take a harder combination of classes, especially since you’re transferring to CoE.

First semester: chem 125/126, chem 130, latin 103, calc 3, english 125. 17 credits
Got waitlisted because of my C+ in calc 3 because [insert freshmen excuses here] still had a 3.5 though

Didn’t get a C+ again and got accepted lol.

I did 140, eecs 183, and calc 4 all in the same semester… not bragging as I did mediocre in those classes… but simply saying yes it’s very doable.

EECS 183 is very easy compared to engr 101.
calc 4 i think is easier than calc 3.
phy 140 is okie dokes… at least compared to phys 240.
Upper level latin might be annoying with all those classes as i still found myself having to study even though I took 3 years of it in high school (there’s just a lot of stuff to remember). But if you’re confident in latin then it’s a fine fourth class.

If you’re ambitious about it and will be able to get at least a B in all your classes… you’ll be fine.

You should call the CoE Cross Campus Transfer Admissions office to ask. I was recently accepted engineering for the Fall 2013 semester. They accepted me even though I didn’t have all the prereqs completed because I had told them I was completing them this summer at a local college.

Okay so bottom line is, most of you are encouraging me to squeeze all the pre-reqs in, right? I don’t want to risk not getting into CoE just because I didn’t take physics.

Mde - If I do plan to transfer, I no longer have to take latin though, correct? I admit I haven’t done all my research but I didn’t think engineering would require four years of a language like LSA does…
