MIT Class of 2017 RD Discussion

^^ lol I’m sick of people saying a certain university is better or superior to one another. Each university has its strengths and weaknesses. Perhaps when ranking and the qualities of curriculums have evident differences, yes one could say that like MIT and Harvard are better than Michigan or UCLA. But there is no point of asserting one university is better and you cannot be the judge.

Neither Harvard nor MIT has much grass. Cities suck. There’s nowhere to escape to unless you have a car, and you can’t have a car because parking is expensive and the drivers are insane. Penn State has mountains and forests and rivers and clean air. Penn State is the best. Everyone go to Penn State.

And really, if you go to MIT you can take half your classes at Harvard anyway. And I’m pretty sure it goes the other way. They’re in the same city. What does it matter.

Hah! I’ve dyed parts of my hair crazy colors since coming here, though I think I worked that out of my system now ;)

While not as ideal as Penn State might be, there are some things you can do! Killian Court is a big patch of green that overlooks the river (I’m sure Lydia knows about this :P). You can also google “Emerald Necklace”, which is a wonderful path to take full of green and pretty things. You can take the T to Alewife and to the Minuteman. If you have a bike, you can go to the East Coast Greenway. If you have a ZipCar account (or similar), you can split day cars with friends and go to Monadnock, or spend a weekend in the White Mountains (absolutely breathtaking).

These certainly aren’t as optimal as “walk outside, you’re in a mountain”, but I’ve found these sustaining :)

Has anyone got any hits from Cambridge, MA on their websites this month?

@HateSMUS

Like I said again

MIT > Harvard

Kay?

nah dude, but you can keep telling yourself that.

I’m not taking you seriously at all. You should be aware that rankings very often, or even always have biased components by this time. According to your logic, Harvard would be a better school than MIT in terms of U.S best university as it was ranked 1st in USNWR.
Beside, I’m not a huge fan of Harvard. I would attend MIT if accepted to both.

If you check their national rankings, MIT isn’t first either. I personally believe MIT is better for my purposes, but I also think USNEWS should have thought twice before publishing conflicting rankings.

Rivstein, you bring up a completely valid point. MIT is not first in the national rankings.

HateSMUS, what I posted was a joke.

But I think World > U.S. because it allows for a great scope of scrutiny in order to allow for more holistic rankings. I did specifically cite World Rankings, not National Rankings.

I have a strong preference to MIT, but that doesn’t necessarily mean MIT’s a better school. USNEWS often contains contradictory rankings but I think it does a decent job in classifying the universities. For example, Harvard, Princeton, MIT belong to the very top tier universities, definitely among top 10. Apart from that, I don’t put any value on the small differences in the ranking.

How does World ranking differ from U.S domestic ranking? How does USNEWS apply ‘a great scope of scrutiny in order to allow for more holistic rankings’?

World Rankings differ from US Rankings because they include factors of international applicants, which implies there’s a greater scope of scrutiny as that’s another factor that is valued in a ranking.

Mod note:
Personal. Attacks. Not. Allowed.

It’s totally fine to argue about the merits of a particular statement, but when the argument devolves into attacking another poster personally, that is not permitted.

Guys, is it really worth arguing over and attacking each other?

Just let it go - I doubt there’s much difference between the top-5 or even top-10.

On another note, how is everyone trying to spend the lovely (sarcasm) time before decisions?

^I’m just trying to find scholarships really.

I got into GaTech so I’m trying to scrap money here and there. You?

^Going insane.

Just kidding (kind of). I don’t know how people manage to wait those 3 months before decisions. Omg.

I’m also looking into scholarships and such, but mostly just trying to get to March with my head still intact. I’ve tried picking up a few new activities though. I’m learning how to sing and also getting into shape for college :D

To keep this entire thread alive, here’s an interesting question.

What do you plan on studying (if accepted) to MIT, and why does that subject fascinate you?

For me, that would be astronomy and physics. It’s just something about the grand scale of the Universe that keeps me up at night.

How am I spending my time until the decision comes out ? –> [Metallica - Nothing Else Matters [Official Music Video] - YouTube](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

Oh, and if (that’s a big if) I get accepted, I will study courses VI & XV.

If I get accepted I’m leaning towards Course 10B or 20

cOUrse 6 here:)
