none
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: passion with computer science, dancing
[] Weaknesses: math score on satII kind of low
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: possibly math score. I go to a very competitive (and well-known) prep school, and my interviewer said that MIT does tend to select against prep school kids.
[li] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] i wish i had retaken mathII (i took it in sophomore year and I think I could have done better).
[/li]

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: I’m not all too broken up (although I know people who got accepted with what I feel are less competitive applications and I had expected at least a deferral). Well, it’s too bad, but congrats, everyone!

**Other schools applying to: Tulane (got in early with Honors program and HUGE scholarship), Georgetown NHS, Stanford, Yale, Berkeley, USC, UCLA, UCSB, UCI, UCD

Decision: Deferred

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):[ul]
[] Essays:
[li] What You Do For Pleasure: Chess[/li][] Department at MIT: Math
[] Trait Most Proud Of: Playfulness
[] World You Come From: Single parent/not supported
[] Significant Challenge: Failing to make MOP 2 times, creativity in mathematics/empathy use
[] Additional Essay/QB Essays: Common app essay
[] Other (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details): [/ul]
[li] Teacher Recommendation #1:English, knows me from Academic Deca. [/li][] Teacher Recommendation #2: Math, knows alot of things
[] Counselor Rec: not sure
[] Additional Info/Rec: Research Mentor
[] Interview: good/ok
[] Art Supplement:
Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: 10/31
[] U.S. State/Territory or Country: California
[] School Type: 2800+ Public
[] Ethnicity: Chinese
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket Range: Not sure
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development):[/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Math/displayed passion for sciences even under my circumstances, they became an armor
[] Weaknesses: the arrow of low GPA hit the armor once. Can it take another hit in RD?
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m a very special case, because I took 70 days off junior year due to a bunch of child abuse stuff/tons of stress. If any lessons be learned, it should be that they’re really willing to overlook the official things like GPA, etc. if you really do have a powerful passion.
[] What would you have done differently?: I actually don’t know, I took a “journey” to fix my emotional problems from having a single father, vs just grinding grades etc. I should’ve made Blue MOP because of abilities/background, but due to a bunch of factors like police, admin, etc. I got screwed over emotionally during the test. Similarly, I got screwed by not making USAJMO MOP too, which was the cause of my absences. [/ul]

**Other Factors: Like I said, missed tons of school. (or should I say voluntarily ditched etc) **

**General Comments & Advice: I got deferred from Caltech as well, instead of straight up rejected. Broke the historical record for my school, lowest GPA to be deferred. If anything, let me be a ragged example of how passion will still work out in your favor if you show it properly. Also, if you’re a prospective mathlete looking into the olympiads/research/everything that seems legit to me, it really helps NOT to go to an extremely intensive school (unless there are other really good math people in that school), or else you’ll just be wasting time on busywork/studying for basic things/getting trolled by teachers and policies. It is extremely OK if you just take 2 AP’s or something as long as you can develop math skill, regardless of what others do.
Stay optimistic as well, it goes a long way to recovering from failures, and sometimes things aren’t that bad really. Take advantage of everything. **

Volunteer/Community Service: A sprinkling of a lot of things
Summer Experience: Pool Volleyball League, Legion Baseball, Lifting for Football

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Essays:
What You Do For Pleasure: Football (8), I was recruited for football so I figured it’d be ok to write about. Discussed using smarts to overcome lack of size
Department at MIT: Chemical/Aerospace Engineering (5), very self deprecating, interested in engineering like everyone else so I’m aware that’s not unique, worth mentioning that favorite subjects are math, physics, etc. and played with legos as a kid
Trait Most Proud Of: Self-Sacrifice/Teamwork (10), kickass essay on how I give it up for the team, with specific examples and explanations on why that’s a sacrifice.
World You Come From: Sterotypical Suburbia (9) includes quote from Tom Petty’s “American Girl”
Significant Challenge: Recent car accident (8), overcoming the mental shock and small physical injuries/loss of backpack with academic stuff to break multiple school receiving records and still maintain straight A’s 1st quarter
Additional Essay/QB Essays: Just put in my hectic daily schedule, admitting I wasn’t unique but it’s still somethin’
Other (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Teacher Recommendation #1:Math, 9, Calculus Teacher Junior year is also my baseball coach so I’m sure he had great things to say.
Teacher Recommendation #2:AP Psych, 9, Had this teacher for a very fun and challenging course and avidly participated in class debates, I’m sure he wrote some good stuff.
Counselor Rec: 6 Probably decent and he knows me well enough to drop some details about my extracurricular activities.
Additional Info/Rec:
Interview: Decent, it was the Saturday morning after a football game so I was very mellow due to lack of energy. I was humble to the point of kicking myself after it because I neglected to bring up a lot of my accomplishments

Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development):Recruited Athlete

Reflection
Strengths: Extracurriculars, Teacher Rec’s, Essays, Fact that I was recruited
Weaknesses: GPA/Transcript, lack of experience in actual research and engineering
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted because I’m a recruited athlete that has fantastic extra curriculars and scores that aren’t bad enough to get actually rejected. Also from a generic public school, religious minority (mormon), and have all the “right” imperfections (tried something new/out of your comfort zone and failed (Some of AP Social Studies courses, that got B+'s in, except for Psych, which I got an A), but not that bad kind of thing. I don’t know my interviewer mentioned it being something they like seeing)
What would you have done differently?: Actually study for my Standardized Tests and actually try in school instead of playing tetris all class.

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice:
Some people get so hung up on trying to stick out on an application, just be yourself and write solid essays that an everyday person can relate to. Not some highfalutin essay about some crazy experience that never happened just so you can stick out on an app. Lastly but most importantly, demonstrate the ability to work in groups/teams, that’s what MIT’s all about.

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice:
It was a very frustrating process but it was worth it. Since sophmore I read CC and the reason I am posting my info is that I know that this may help anyone out there who is thinking in applying to MIT. My best advice is prepare with time and read the blogs and be yourself:)

Number of other EA applicants in your school: 1 (he was deferred)
Common Awards (AP Scholar, honor roll, NM things, etc.): AP scholar, honor roll, NM commended, a district physics award

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description): Supercomputing club I started, a handful of national supercomputing conferences I presented at, 2nd in state for varsity High Jump in Track, my own projects dabbling with alarm systems, 2nd in region for cycling comp.
Job/Work Experience: job at EE company for 2 consecutive summers
Volunteer/Community Service: not very much (30 or so hours) but what I did meant a lot to me
Summer Experience: research in parallel programming the digital reassembly of 3D puzzle pieces (which happened to be skull fragments)

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Essays:
What You Do For Pleasure: parkour in wedges - I’m serious, 10
Department at MIT: EE, I’ve already worked in the field and dabbled in my own projects concerning the field, so I knew what I was talking about, 10
Trait Most Proud Of: selflessness, I talked to friends and even acquaintances and got their first impressions of me to write this one and tied it with things I learned while tutoring, 8

Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): None (unless from a minority state counts, which I highly doubt)

Reflection
Strengths: courses, extra projects and HPC work, high jump/parkour/sporty extracurriculars
Weaknesses: national/regional competitions - since HPC doesn’t have very many for high school students at this point
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I had all of the bases covered and I think it came down to the essays where they could see my interests and the way I approach obstacles (physical and mental) and they decided that fit the school
What would you have done differently?: I would have done a research program, so that I knew I’d get a solid research experience such as the program at BU or RSI or SEAP. I ended up researching at a local university doing a cool project, but it was work I had to create myself and that my mentor couldn’t help we with - I was introducing him to the world of HPC.

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: Try to get passed all the “little things” - everyone in the running will have great GPAs and test scores. Find what you do that makes you unique - what do you do that other people don’t? Take that to the next level and the level after that, and then present it at conferences, get feedback, and write about it on your application.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I like to think I can be kinda cool to talk to every now and then, and that I can be a bit funny when I want to, so hopefully that showed in my application.
[] Weaknesses: Relatively speaking, I guess that 32 ACT would be seen as a weakness. I don’t think it’s a weakness though. I am proud of that 32
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: For my strengths?
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] Pshht, nothing. Well, maybe I would’ve combed my hair the morning I sent in my application. Ooh, maybe go skydiving or something. That’d be epic.

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: When in doubt, be yourself, and no one else. Life advice right there. In all seriousness, PLEASE be yourself. Think about it: If you come off as a square when you’re really not a square, then the people looking at your application are actually going to think that you’re a square (unless you really are a square, then that’s cool, I love squares). And, the thing is, colleges can only admit so many squares, right? So be an icosahedron (I swear I did not make that up), or whatever you are, and let that icosahedronness shine through. You’ll probably be one of only a few icosahedron, which’ll make you stand out a little bit. Just my 2 cents. Also, don’t make college admissions into such a mechanical process. It really isn’t, or at least it shouldn’t be. You shouldn’t be sitting there going, “Five ECs? Check. Perfect test scores? Check. Oh wait, my SAT II is a 790, better go make that perfect before I can apply.” Just do what YOU do, and then by the time you have to report what YOU do on YOUR application, it’ll be easy, and it’ll look good to colleges, because it’s what YOU’ve been doing with YOUR fantastic life. Alright I’m done.

Decision: AdMITted

like seriously, be yourself! my essays had clear voice and I played my individuality to the max, making puns with my name (yes I went there) seriously most of the people that apply to MIT could survive academically (theoretically) but they’re looking for more than that!
