I gave my teachers the standard letter envelopes to send the recommendations in. I know some schools like Columbia and Stanford want you to send their stuff in 9x12 in envelopes and I didn't see anything on MIT's website about this.

No need for special envelopes, don't worry.

My impression is that only Stanford requires 9 by 12 envelopes. I read over the Columbia information and it appears that they have no preference regarding what type of envelope their application is sent in. Would it be possible for someone to provide a link to the page indicating the necessity of 9 by 12 envelopes for Columbia? Thanks.

In addition you're definitely ok with regular envelopes for MIT, they have no special preferences regarding this.

On the recommendation forms for Columbia it says do not fold the paper. I'm assuming you need 9x12 envelopes.

Stanford is the MOST picky school for this stuff... GOSH.. you have to use the right size envelops. right labeling, certain things in by certain date....
Good thing I am not applying there.

MIT let's you use whatever you like =D cuz they are cool like that

OK, thanks.

btw, the previous post was replying to post #4 :D.

Also, I too really like the way MIT let's applicants use whichever envelopes they like! However, many schools process thousands of applications every year, and it makes sense that they might have specific requirements regarding how information is sent in.
