Like this message if you got rejected. Just curious to see how many rejects there are.

Deferred. But I read someplace they have a high number of deferred students, close to 75%

amazing number of apps
congrats to those accepted and good luck to those deferred

My son is applying RD - still working on his application. I believe that once you apply, they may offer you an interview. Would love to hear from those who applied EA whether they were offered interviews and their thoughts on the interview process.

I was rejected:/

Yep, me too.
Rejected. When I was able to check "To do list ", it showed showed that MIT didn’t received my transcripts even though the counselor had send it.

Can anyone suggest any valuable input on actions to take for deferred students.

My kid applied RD about 2 weeks ago and got an interview request last week. We are in New England so they probably have a lot more interviewers in our region than in others (and I think they like to keep them regional, even with virtual interviews.)

ECs are notified when an applicant’s application is complete (and not before). With a shortage of ECs, you might stand a better chance the sooner you get your application in.

Last year I had 1 student on my list to interview on the afternoon the applications were due and had already scheduled their interview. I had about 8 more when I looked the following day. I was able to do them all but it was getting close to the deadline when I finished the last interview and wrote the report.

10k out of 15k applicants got deferred, so I’d suggest moving on to other T20 colleges for RD round

Was she an international or domestic student??

This is from the MIT website:
Can I send in new materials, redo parts of my application, send in new letters of recommendation, or send in a new portfolio?

We deferred you because we want to reevaluate your application as is (i.e. it is competitive as it is!). You CANNOT rewrite your essays, redo your interview, replace your letters of recommendation with new ones, or redo your application.

The only update you will be asked to send is the February Updates & Notes (FUN) Form (we will send you an email letting you know when this form is available). In the FUN Form, you can tell us things like:

  • Your midyear grades
  • Anything new that has happened or will happen before we review RA applications, like new awards, activities, work, etc.
  • Anything about your circumstances that have changed since you submitted your application that you think we should know about

Note: You do NOT necessarily need to fill the form with new updates. If you’re only providing your midyear grades, that’s totally fine.

If you have new test scores, simply log in to your Application Status Page and scroll down to where you can see all the scores you’ve submitted. Below the test scores chart is a link that says, “Add new test scores.” Clicking this link will bring you to a new page where you can self-report your scores. You do not need to send in official scores from the testing agency. Please note: Scores cannot be deleted once they are submitted.

You technically can submit a supplemental portfolio by January 6, but again, your application is competitive as-is and there is absolutely no pressure to submit anything else. In fact, we only recommend you submit a supplemental portfolio or letter if you were planning to do it for EA but just ran out of time. You can’t make changes to portfolios that have already been submitted, but if you absolutely must, you can email us about progress you’ve made regarding an existing portfolio at admissions@mit.edu.

Things you DON’T have to do:

  • Send us an email saying you’re still interested in MIT (we’ll assume you are unless you tell us otherwise)
  • Write a new essay (the FUN Form’s ~200 word limit prevents you from doing this)
  • Bombard our office with excessive emails or new materials

Most, if not all, of the top colleges claim they don’t favor typical applicants who apply in the early round, but only handful of them genuinely don’t. MIT is one of them. If you’re deferred, you’re like most other EA applicants, who will be reconsidered by AOs, likely more closely (because they’re less time constrained in the RD round), along with the other RD applicants (which would give AOs a better picture of the overall applicant pool).

Can anyone shine some lights on whether or not MIT recruits some students based on their athletic merits in the EA? If yes, will this continue in the RA?

A small number of EA admits are athletic recruits. The football team had less than 10 of their EA recruits admitted (including my son). Athletic recruiting does continue through RD.

Should I have like remotely started my MIT app for RD by now? How long are the unavoidable processing times going to be and will they screw me over? And is it even worth it since I’ve been accepted to Stanford’s REA round?
