Im a student from MITES 2007 and MIT class of 2012 ;DDD so if anyone has any questions about MITES/MIT application process feel free to ask

Lol i'm not allowed to have a facebook/myspace account...but I do have lots of questions.

are they gonna send me more literature on what to bring/what is provided?

what exactly is the fly-in and how long does it last?

what do you predict the acceptance rate into MIT will be for the 2008 MITES?

Do MITES have any C's on their transcripts?

SPLphunk whats the name of the group on facebook b/c i cant find it under MITES 2008

well i tried searching for it and couldnt find it either but the link to the group is:

thank you .

I can answer that I now. I exactly one C & even a D on my transcript. Like I said I can be a down right underachiever at times.

1) You should be getting a packet soon with what all to bring. Pretty much what they say is all you need. Make sure to bring a swimming clothes, athletic clothes, and formal wear. if you want you can take stuff like frisbees, footballs, or a soccer ball. Those seem to be the popular sports but who knows. The whole summer you have access to pretty much everything has to offer, including all athletic facilities and the chance to go sailing (i did the swim test for it but i never had a chance to go out)

2) what do you mean by "fly-in"? like flight time?

3 and 4) There really is no predicted acceptance rate into MIT after MITES. I will say that the MITES program is held in high regard through all prestigious universities. Before our class, i think on average about 30 students matriculated into MIT, in our class we had 50 that were accepted, and still are waiting to see how many are going to matriculate. At the end of the program you are given a report of how well you did in your classes. You dont recieve any final grades at all. Although throughout the program you do recieve grades on all assignments, these are only to determine your delta. No one outside of your professors ever see your grades and they are never released. How well you do in the program is based on your delta, or change. If you come in having a very strong background in all subjects, you are expected to challenge yourself and still give yourself a "positive delta". one of the most popular sayings in MITES is "Its all about the delta". Back to the report given at the end, every teacher writes an evaluation of your performance in the class. They evaluate your performance in the class and basically summarize your "delta". This ends up turning into a "recommendation" of sorts. At the end you are given a chance from the MITES office to have them send your report to 3 colleges of your choice accompanied by a letter of recomendation from the director on MIT letterhead.

hope this helps. any other q's?

Great information concerning recommendations! Thanks SPLphunk

Wow SPLphunk, that's some good info.

So from what I gather, it is important for me to do well at MITES so I can get good recs? Looking back, is this something you wish you knew from the get go (or maybe this applies to others)?

"2) what do you mean by "fly-in"? like flight time? "

Some people didn't get accepted, but from what I understand MITES is paying for them to "fly in" and see the campus. I was wondering what this is about.

"in our class we had 50 that were accepted"

Wow! I'm assuming that's out of ~70 or 80, yes? So, like 2/3...and did it seem like those were the ppl who did well at MITES?

"At the end you are given a chance from the MITES office to have them send your report to 3 colleges of your choice accompanied by a letter of recomendation from the director on MIT letterhead."

When you say "you are given a chance," does that mean everyone can do this? That sounds pretty awsome! I would think that a letter from the director of MIT would sound pretty great to adcoms.

do you guys think we will have to use the sleeping bag? (fly in). by the way, did you guys do a group on myspace

1) So i would say to your first question, yes its important to perform well throughout the program so that you get good recs. But, i will say...we took it to mean...its just more important to perform better the second half of the program lol.

2) hm, i never even heard of fly-ins. i do remember once the director talkin about how some he was talking to other students who never got in but that was about it. Sorry, i dont have much info on this.

3) we went 50 accepted/60 that applied. Our class size was 64. And everyone going to MITES is going to do well, for the most part, but even those who i would have thought didn't do so well got in. Some of the others that did well in the program also didnt get into MIT. So, that might be a little more based on the applications.

4) yes everyone has the opportunity to do the recommendations. You are limited to three colleges, that the MITES office will send out to themselves. They also send you a copy of the report and you are free to copy that as you will to send to colleges, it just wont b on MIT letterhead with the directors rec. And one clarification, its the director of the MITES program not MIT

for the sleep-in's im guessing you will prob need a sleeping bag if you are being hosted by another student. Usually they will have the students talk to you before you get there so you can ask your host wether or not you really need one.

and i havent done a myspace group. i was debating it. but i got lazy. heres the facebook group

Login | Facebook

if i can get myself over my chronic senioritis i will do the myspace group later

tzky, I'm taking my sleeping bag, but I think it depends on your host...it's going to be a pain carting that thing around the airport all day : (

well cool you guys, i ll see you all tomorrow, im almost 5'11, white, (i think) dirty blond hair up to my eyes (didnt get a haircut though i was planning on to today), and i think ill be wearing jeans and a black shirt with a green clover. ill be getting there tomorrow at around 3, 4 pm.

It was great meeting all of you guys! I'm really excited for mites now.

I hope you guys had fun. They made an official MITES 2008 facebook now.
