MIT MITES Summer 2014

lol sounds cool.

By the way, my recommenders will be sent this link <a href=“MITES – MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering and Science”>MITES – MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering and Science, right? Or do I need to tell them where to find the link?

Thanks!

edit: I just think it’d be cool to know what my teachers wrote about me XD but thanks for the info lol.

The MITES alums have done great as well, with around 15 (out of 78 total) getting into MIT EA, though I was deferred too lol! Through QB, there have been 4 matches including Northwestern, Caltech, Princeton, and Stanford. There were also quite a few that got into Harvard, Stanford, and Caltech EA.

Hopefully everyone is working hard on their MITES application because the deadline is slowly creeping up! :)

@Blizzard, deferred students unite. :confused: It is so hard to watch everyone celebrating their acceptances, I just want to be able to join them! So proud and happy for all of them, they really deserved it!
Apdenoatis, they will be sent the link.

Thanks to every alumni on here that has helped answer questions :slight_smile:

Currently I’m facing two possible Bs on my transcript, not good :frowning: so worried now about MITES

@orangemaple don’t flip too much lol - I’ll have 7 Bs, and 4 of those are in math/science classes. Fingers crossed!

What other schools are you applying to?

@maple-
I actually finished all my applications about a month ago, and I sent to Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, Harvey Mudd, Berkeley, UCI, USC, University of Rochester, Rose-Hulman, and Rice. I actually might submit another safety if I feel like it.

Most E2 and MITES alums apply to the usual top schools. :slight_smile: Besides MIT, I believe some of the most popular colleges are Stanford, Columbia, and Cornell.

Hi guys, I’m applying to MITES and I’ve come across a couple ambiguities in my application and I’ve tried emailing the MITES help email but the answers they give aren’t exactly specific.

Here are a couple:

PSAT - There are three fields, ‘Math’, ‘Critical Reading’, and ‘Composite’. By composite do they mean CR + M or CR + M + W.

Race - I’m full hispanic, and they have a specific option to say that I am hispanic apart from the race section, but in the race field there is only ‘white’, ‘black’, ‘Native American’, ext. Should I just put ‘White’ or should I put ‘White’ + ‘Native American’ and in the details option put ‘Andean’.

Rank - My school/county use percentile ranks (top 1%, 10%, 25%, ext) in comparison to the entire county. The mites team told me to put in ‘0’ as my rank, which indicates no ranking system, and to have my counselor say my percentage rank in their letter of rec. However, for ‘class size’ should I put my county class size of 7100 or my school’s.

SAT - I took it in November and got a 2000. I’m taking it again in January (for different purposes) and I was wondering if they would accept those scores if I emailed them when I get them back (They should come back in the 2nd week of February and the application deadline is February 1). Also, I know this has been asked before, but how much does a 2000 (690M, 660CR, 650W) reflect on me, especially since the two other kids applying from my school have a 2250 and a 2270.

Essays - Alumni who have applied, do you have any advice on the essays? The 300 word limit really strains the creativity that can be put into these. Secondly, I’m really unsure how to go about these essays, so it would be extremely helpful if one of you posted up one of your essays. Just so we, this years applicants, can get a taste of what an essay should read like. Also, if you’re up for it, message me if your interested in giving my essays a quick read.

School - Also, I’m a bit anxious about the reputation of my school. We are a public IB school, probably the best overall in my county, and we’ve placed in the top 100 schools (washington post). A grand majority of kids who come to my school are VERY affluent and therefore our school profile must be very good as well (high graduation/college enrollment rates, ext). I very much appreciate the oppurtunity to attend this school, but the science/engineering oppurtunities are VERY limited. Specially in the applied sciences, we don’t even have an AP or IB Physics class and the engineering department is overwhelmingly underdeveloped. I don’t want the admissions to get the wrong impression of me having abundant oppurtunities in STEM, I don’t, hence why I REALLY want to attend MITES.

<----This part is basically a ‘chance me’, please stop reading here if you’re not interested in the whole ‘chancing’ ordeal. The above concerns are much more important not just to me but to other people in similar situations---->

Lastly, here is a brief description of my ‘profile’, I would appreciate any feedback.

2000 SAT (690M, 660CR, 650W)
189 PSAT (67M, 66CR, 56W)
Hispanic - Colombian
3.96 (unweighted), 4.9 Weighted
Free or Reduced Lunch
Dad - Waiter + Bar Tender, Mom - Preschool teacher (Both have a Bachelor’s in Business)
ECs/Awards (these are the one’s I’m listing in my app):

 • Computer Science Club (President)
 • Technology Student Association (Vice President, 3 Top 10 places in State competitions)
 • Math Team (no special awards)
 • Tae-kwon-do (Black belt)
 • Academic Team
 • Political Science Club
 • 7th place Individual STEM Florida Gulf Coast University Competition

Science Teacher - Letter of Rec. It is extraordinary.
Math Teacher - Shaky, she has a preference for the two other students applying but acknowledges my potential (I’m a VERY logical problem solver, however, I wasn’t involved in math team in the past years as I am this year while the other two students were)
Guidance Counselor - No clue

@greenwave2015
PSAT: composite is all 3 combined

Race: I am Hispanic as well but it all comes down to what you consider yourself, which for most of us would be white or black.

Rank: for class size, use your grade level at your school. For example, there are 29 seniors in my graduating class (small I know lol)

SAT: only the scores you have at the time you submit the application will be reviewed, and they do not look at scores after the deadline evem if you send them. Score-wise, it really depends on you as a whole because I got into MITES without ever taking the SAT or ACT, just the PSAT which was not anything spectacular (150 <x<200 just to give a range)

Essays: my advice is to make them personal and talk about whatever you think has not been shown about you on the other sections of the application, so sort of like an interview. You want to be yourself but at the same time make sure you answer the prompt. I’m not sure that sharing our essays would help because of the personal information each person had amd probably doesn’t want to share online.

School: Don’t worry about it. We had students from schools in the top 3 to schools like mine which aren’t even known to anyone. I am in the IB as well but what they look for is if you took advantage of what your school offered.

For chances, it really all depends on the readers of your application, because the MITES pool of applicants is much more complicated to judge than MIT’s in general. Keep working hard and enjoy your winter vacation! :)

Greenwave-
I replied to your PM, and reiterate for any other students reading that we have had MITES/E2ers from the very top HS’s in America. XD

You sound like the students that MITES accepts! Good luck and keep us updated.

I am Asian Indian, and basically I want to know if I have a chance.
Converted GPA (scale of four): 3.94
PSAT: 222
ACT: 32 (Freshman year)
SAT: 2200 (sophomore year)

EC:
Robotics FIRST FRC Safety Officer
Technology Ambassadors: Helps other students with technical problems
Project with Medtronic about biocompatibility of materials
National Beta Club
National Latin Honors Society
Knowledge Bowl
Band Club (oboist)
National Thespian Society
National Latin Exam Gold Medalist (4 years)
Highest score in my school on the AMC 10 (~97)

I also memorize pi for fun. I didn’t say that on the app though, and I was wondering if I should.

I don’t have many volunteer activites- just this one that I do over the summer at a center for special needs children.
My dad is the only one of my parents with a degree (my mom went to college in India, but didn’t finish or something. I don’t really know the details), and it’s an undergrad. He’s a financial planner.
I haven’t really attended summer programs.
I go to a really good school, it’s just more liberal arts than STEM.
Also, I’m not sure about my essays, so if someone could help with that, that would be much appreciated.

Also, is it okay if the essays aren’t in the 250-300 word range? Most of mine are around 200-250.

Ariveri-
You have a competitive application for most if not all STEM summer programs, just be aware that you aren’t really in the MITES targeted demographic, so I’m not sure if they will see you as a match for their program :slight_smile: Everyone who applies has a chance–be sure to write really good essays that especially target any challenges you faced in your STEM education. Your essay lengths seem fine.

With scores like that, there are MANY excellent summer programs you have a good chance at! Are you applying to RSI?

No, and I just checked the site for it, and my scores, while good, don’t meet the guidelines.
Are there any other ones you would reccomend?

I encourage you to apply anyway as people with scores below their specifications have gotten in (I applied with worse scores, rejected XD). Poke around on this forum as there are many with a more comprehensive list than I could give you–some include SSP (not the Harvard one), SIMR, etc.

I’m sort of worried about the rigor of my classes right now. I’m currently taking Pre-Calc and Physics. Is this level too low for the avg. MITES students?

My school doesn’t offer either of those classes so it’s more on what you’re taking compared to what your school offers.

Hey guys, for the essay that you write about your fav extracurricular-I’m not really sure what I should write about. Here’s the topics that I am currently debating over:

I love to write. Writing is my passion–it started when I tried to learn English (and think in the language) four years ago. I even ended up publishing a fictional book, so it’s definitely something that I love to do. It’s just something I really enjoy generally, but nothing special or big at all.

I’m currently the teacher/organizer/founder of this Comp Sci class in my school. It’s primary objective is to introduce young women to computer programming when they are still in middle school. It took me a whole lot of time and effort to set it up last year and run it, and I’m genuinely happy to do it as my volunteer activity.

I am just torn between both activities–if anyone can shed light on this, I’ll really appreciate it, thanks!

@nobody
Both things sound really cool! Mind me asking, what’s your native language? From how enthusiastic you sound about either, I’m sure you’d be fine to write about whichever one you choose. I’m thinking you could probably develop the latter a bit more. It’s both a social service/personal activity. More importantly, you trying to get young women into computer science goes hand in hand with the purpose of MITES. Definitely find somewhere else to at least mention your writing though!

I’m in a similar situation as you, so if anybody wants to comment, please do.

Computer Science Club - I’m the founder/president of this club. I spend a good chunck of my week organizing the events (some are online and some are at universities, we’re going to be doing battlecode in january). The club isn’t huge (<10 kids) so its not that much of a headache to run things but I do have a lot of fun in it and it means a lot to me.

Technology Student Association - It’s a relatively new chapter at our school and my junior class is basically the one that’s been building it since the seniors who started it our freshman year left. I’m Vice President and I’m pretty much the treasurer as well, I take care of all the fundraising (hoping to get a CNC machine soon) and most members come to me when asking for advice on their projects (I learn a lot from helping them too). Even though I’m not president, this is the club that’s pushed to be more of a leader than any of my other clubs, especially because the president is kind of shy so its fair to say that we run things about equally. I’ve also placed at the state level on some of my projects.

@orangemaple
My school didn’t even have a physics teacher until this year and I found out too late to take the class:P. Lucky you. Having those limited classes might actually bolster your chances because you obviously could use some more advanced curriculum and that’s what MITES is aiming for. Keep in mind one of the math options is Calc I, so they definitely have in mind that some kids don’t have the option to take calculus (btw, you’ll love it).

@greenwave2015

The thing is my HS actually offers up to AP Calc BC, but when entering HS I could only start at Geometry due to some silly reasons actually, so I’m kind of behind on my Ivy-league calibre friends who are already taking AP Calc AB. So I’m worried that MITES will see me as not having rigorous classes
