Mit Wtp 2008

<p>how many juniors are applying to MIT women's technology program for the 2008 summer?</p>

<p>and if you've done it before, can you tell me if my stats are somewhat in the range of other asian girls who've gotten into this summer program?</p>

<p>PSAT:
Math: 80
CR: 80
Writing: 75 ( i got one wrong :()
total: 235</p>

<p>SATII:
BioM: 800
Chem: 800</p>

<p>Grades and stuff:
Freshman year: 4.0 (frosh year classes not weighted, only 3 honors available)
classes that i took:
geometry honors
bio honors
spanish honors
english standard
global studies standard</p>

<p>Soph year: 4.7 weighted
AP Envisci, 5 on test
algebra 2 honors
chem honors
spanish 3 honors
ap us history 1
english honors</p>

<p>rank: about 5 or something/400+</p>

<p>Junior year (this year)
AP Calc BC
AP Bio
AP Physics B
(tested out of physics honors)
AP US history 2
AP English 3
Spanish 4 honors</p>

<p>Activities that i would put on the app
1. girl's varsity tennis (10,11) - 2nd singles for 2 years, Iron Hills Conference Champions
2. science league (9,10,11) - in state: 2nd place Bio 1 individual, 1st school; 6th place Chem 1 individual, 3rd school
3. Cancer Prevention and Awareness Club (11) - founder and president
4. Animal Alliance (9, 10, 11) - we raised like $1000 last year to help homelesls animals
5. Future BUsiness leaders of america (9,10,11) - 5th place in region for business math, 4th place in region for intro to business communication, 1st place in state for intro to business communication, 2nd place in nation for intro to business communication.
and i kino i can only pick four...i think i'll go with 1, 2, 3, 5.</p>

<p>and my teachers like me, i hope, so my recommendations should be okay.</p>

<p>AND THATS IT! what do you think, and who else is thinking about applying?</p>

<p>You have a great chance of getting in because accepted girls are "among the top math and science students in the country", your scores show that.</p>

<p>Typically between 200-400 juniors have applied for WTP in the last 3-4 years.</p>

<p>haha thanks. but i'm gonna bet that anyone who applies is "among the top math and science students in the country" based on their psats and stuff, loll</p>

<p>Hi! Glad to hear you're applying to WTP. I went this past summer and highly recommend it; it was an amazing experience. Your stats look fine to me, I wouldn't worry about them that much. Spend time on the 3 Questions to make yourself stand out from the pack! :)</p>

<p>While we're on the topic of WTP, what defines over-qualified? I have experience in robotics and engineering, but I still think going to WTP would be awesome. Would I be auto-rejected just because I've been exposed to these types of things before, regardless of my interest in math and science?</p>

<p>I'm not sure. I know girls who were very involved in robotics in my track (EECS), so I don't think they will hold that against you.</p>

<p>if i have absolutely no robotics, engineering, computer science, and calculus experience, is that bad?
oh and im varsity tennis senior captain</p>

<p>nope not at all! i was like that, although i had AP Calc junior year. but the actual program assumes no knowledge of calc- you actually don't need it at all because it's all discrete math. And the computer scencei stuff starts at the very beginning too. You don't need any type of specific "pre-requisite" in engineering/robotics/calculus/computer science, so don't sweat it!</p>

<p>and just curious, how are you a varsity tennis senior captain right now? You do know that the program is for current juniors, right?</p>

<p>no, i will be next year, so my coach says (2008). im currently a junior right now and wil be applying to college next year haha.</p>

<p>how much time did u guys spend on ur apps?</p>

<p>i'm applying for EECS
I spent so much time on my app
I'm all done but I'm just editing it over</p>

eeeek..i didn't :(</p>

<p>eh, i'm sure youre fine
your scores are amazing!
i'm just a perfectionist</p>

<p>technol21: I was "overqualified" last year. </p>

<p>Being "overqualified" is not MIT's way of saying do not apply here in your
senior year. The WTP program and MIT UG admissions are not connected.
If you are good enough to be "overqualified" (not "rejected") your chances
at MIT EA are pretty decent (though I was feeling crushed for a period of 3
months and was not even going to apply EA this year).</p>

<p>.... your robotics background might be a downer if you are applying to
ME. Keep in mind that the WTP charter is
to turn young girls "on to" the possibilities of a career in engineering- not
nurture those of us who already know we are going to be engineers and
just want a taste of MIT during summer. </p>

<p>At the time of application, I had self taught myself perl
and was a webmaster/sys admin with Linux, Apache and had done
CGI web based maintenance for a year (my job) + 2 courses via
EPGY in CS (ISEF state rep in my soph year with other natnl awards
as well).</p>

<p>Similar Web programming profiles for other "overqualifieds" from previous
years lead me to believe in hindsight that I should not have fessed up
to my Web maintenance and programming background. </p>

<p>:)</p>

<p>should i write on my app that i took computer programming for engineers at a college and went to robot camp?
i know i'm not overqualified, i can definitely learn a lot from this program, but i dont want them thinking i am just because of those things</p>

<p>^don't. i think they think ppl who've taken aP compsci to be overqualified.
i have absolutely NONE of those robotics/compsci things, so i should be okay?</p>

<p>and since the accept 60 ppl/~200 do u think most of them r cuz they were overqualified?</p>

<p>yeah, you should be okay</p>

<p>idk, though, bc it says the language they teach is java and i didn't check off that i've had experience with that
and i think some people who have taken AP comp sci have gotten in</p>

<p>narcissa: rejected and overqualified are 2 different things.</p>

<p>A very small number of applicants a year are deemed overqualified.
...about 5 applicants last year were apparently overqualified. These usually
had great reccs, essays and stats but had too much web programming
(since WTP specifically covers this) experience. </p>

<p>Good Stats include
AMC12/AIME/USAMO; Sci fair awards at State and National levels and
possibly lots of community service as well.</p>

<p>The rest of the ones who do not get to attend WTP are rejected.
These may not have adequate essays/reccs/stats.</p>

<p>oh, okay
so i probably won't be overqualified since i don't know web programming
do you think it would be a good idea to take that class off my app though?
i think it makes me look good, but i dont want them thinking i know a lot already</p>

i have none of that DARN. some community service tho, ~100 hours</p>
