Mit Wtp 2008

Rejected with no mention of being overqualified.
So very disappointed.
I had 4 APs in 10th grade all 5 with AP Calc BC and AP Comp Sc.
I'm taking 6 in my Junior year including AP Physics C and AP Statistics.
My PSAT 226 (M80,73,73)

So if I cann't make it in 60/219 then there doesn't seem to be any chances to get into MIT.

Can one of Nacissa or classOf09 post their rejection letter that says Overqualified?

I'm totally heartbroken.

Congratulations! We are pleased to inform you that you have been admitted to the 2008 Women’s
Technology Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Mechanical Engineering.
You are part of an outstanding group of 20 students selected from an applicant pool of 219 young
women. You had expressed a preference for the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Track, but your extensive math and computer science background led us to believe you would be
bored by the EECS curriculum. We think you will enjoy the WTP-ME curriculum and hope you
decide to join us!

Thanks Classof09.
My letter doesn't indicate the lines
"but your extensive math and computer science background led us to believe you would be bored by the EECS curriculum."

So my application doesn't seem to be an overqualification.
It is really sad.

Narcissa; was it same for you too?

I don't think your WTP rejection is a sign of your imminent rejection from MIT. MIT admissions really wants to see that you can make the best of any situation and use your free time to follow your passions, not necessarily that you can get to its own summer programs.

Thanks burnitblue for the support but think it from the perspective of getting into any college with 60 positions and 219 applied if you cann't make into it then there must be something wrong with your application and not necessarily wrong with the program.
It might be true that not all who got selected to WTP get into MIT but those who got rejected from WTP might not get accepted to MIT unless they were rejected because of over qualifications.

I think I need to rethink about my college choices.

I'm sure there are people who were rejected from WTP who got into MIT.. WTP is only a summer program. :/ What are your stats btw?

It doesn't seem like; 60/219 is around 27.4% while MIT admissions are 12%.
There are next to nothing chances; it might be better to rethink my choices.
My Stats:
PSAT: 226 (80M,73,73)
School: Private Prep
Rank: NA
SAT IIs: 770 (M), 780 (Chem)
SAT1: Taking June 7th
APs:
10th: Calc BC (5), Comp Sc (5), Euro Hist (5), Chemistry (5)
11th: Statistics, Physics C, Biology, US History, English Lang
Taken Research and publish a paper, didn't make it to ISEF though

Your stats are fine and the APs are impressive. Out of personal interest, I could easily tell you not to apply (as to give me more of a chance!) but you really are a competitive applicant so I would strongly urge you to give it a try.

Thanks classof09 for the support but I think my application need some more work.
I was discouraged only because I was not deemed overqualified. I knew that one of my senior who was deemed overqualified but subsequently got accepted early. So I was wishing to be overqualified as I want to spend my summer doing research internship but this was heart breaking.
I'll now rethink only after my summer research internship; if my reserach produces any results then I'll apply otherwise I'll channel my energy to other colleges.

But goodluck to you as you seem very capable with a great shot at MIT.

For those who haven't received their decision yet, there's a notice on the wtp website.

(functional bump)

oooh

me kids get a nice pen and flashlight with their letters.
but my flashlight doesn't work. :(

now i feel bad about thinking about rejecting this.

oh, that's sad! They're pretty spiffy, though. I got emailed the forms, so I wasn't expecting anything else.

WTP acceptees seem to get into MIT at a higher % level. That said,
candidates who do not go to WTP get into MIT- the two admittance
processes are not similar. The people doing the accepting are also
very different and have dissimilar views.

[] Make sure when you apply to MIT in Fall your essays are not droll but
reflect your quirkiness and appetite for fun.
[] Also seriously consider who
gave you the reccos. There is a small chance the reccos were not
all it should have been (English/Grammar, non-sincere,too-glowing or not glowing)? [/ul]

WTP rejectees do get into MIT. My suitmate at MIT was rejected from BOTH WTP (for being overqualified) and RSI.

When WTP applications are read, WTP is looking for girls with little background in EECS (but a strong math and science background) who could truly benefit from the program. Often, if you've taken AP CS, and have done robotics programs, you honestly have probably covered a majority of the EECS curriculum and you will be BORED in class. WTP is doing you a favor by rejecting you, I promise. And as arwen said, MIT doesn't have this "overqualification" filter, so don't be discouraged to apply.

indianinLA,

oooooo my goodness. come on, use your statistics brain:

do you really think the 219 girls who apply to WTP are representative of the entire population of MIT applicants?

of course not.

MIT should be no one's safety school, but the sorts of girls who are inclined to spend a summer away from home may be more motivated than everyone in general. do not decide to not apply to MIT just based on your rejection from WTP. you may end up deciding MIT is not for you, but if you do, it had better be for multiple reasonable factors, and not just one event that is not even a true indicator.

talknerdytome,

it sounded like you may have been overqualified anyway. hope you will still consider MIT!

Ok, I called the MIT WTP office after all the responses to find out what the deal is and they informed the same thing that they put up on the MIT WTP site and told that to few students they did send out just the following additional information
"You seems prepared for a career in computer science and engineering and should apply to colleges with strong engineering departments including MIT and included the pointer to MyMIT."
They told that I should have recieved this in the letter and it should indicates that they would like me to apply to MIT.
I think they just made it up according to what letter was sent to me as they asked my name but whatever I think I'll still consider applying.

Hey indianInLA: dont worry about it, i know girls who were rejected from WTP (and not b/c of overqualification) who got into MIT. It's certainly possible, and no less rejected girls get in than normal girls who didn't apply to WTP in the first place.

Narcissa: I was sad because they didn't tag my application as overqualified. Did your rejection letter indicated the application was overqualified?

Overqualified rejection letters generally do indicate that the applicant is overqualified.
