I applied hope it goes well…

Ahhh, I hope I get in… D:

I have crummy stats, though, so I can only hope.

I’m planning to apply to some other programs since MITES is a bit of a longshot. Could you guys reccomend any good ones? I’m already planning on applying to PROMYS, and I got some stuff from YESS and TASP in the mail so I might apply to those too.

I applied too, I hope the best for all of you…
I agree with the starter of this topic, this should NOT become an insecurity topic, with many “do i have a chance?” posts.
However, i am curious to see what other students applied and their stats. i am not asking for advice, im asking for a general impression of what the applicants are like
Ill start-
race-hispanic
born- medell

you basically own me at life you’ll do fine. I’m hispanic, I learned spanish and english at the same time. my gpa is a 4.0 (unweighted) and i got a 201 on my psat (haven’t taken a real sat yet).

Oh, i learned spanish first, then english, what country are you from?
4.0 unweighted? How on earth do you do that!?
perfect 100s on everything!? °_°

Well with that competition, I’m definitely not getting in…

UW GPA: 3.641/4.0
SAT: 1270 (610 CR/660 M)
APs this year: AP Calc BC, AP Stats, AP US Hist, AP Span. Lang (all self-studies, school has a different program that’s not AP and that we can’t take AP classes)
Race: Hispanic (Colombia representin’ !, but I’m not paisa [eew :p]. Barranquilla FTW!)
Hook - I don’t think being an immigrant is much of a hook… :/

Well I’m technically still from the US, I’m from Puerto Rico and its a common wealth and all. At our school you get a couple extra points added onto semester averages for ap classes. They don’t give us official gpa and rank until senior year but my counselor told me my gpa is about a 100.9 and that i should be ranked 3rd or 4th in my class.

@ansar
don’t sweat the grades too much, they base the decisions on a lot more than just that

UW GPA: 3.8000/4.0
PSAT: 226: M 74, CR 72, W 80
I haven’t taken the SAT since 8th grade. My scores were really good, but really good for an eigth grader. Just average for someone my age. Didn’t submit.
APs: APUSH (last year), AP Calc BC, AP Lang & Comp, AP Human Geography, AP Art History
Race: Black/African American
Hook - My childhood was very post-racial and it influenced my perception of the world. Maybe? I don’t know. I know that my counselor wrote my a stellar rec. She was really giddy about it. I think my science teacher might have too.

I guess I’ll go ahead and do this too…

UW GPA: 3.99
Class Rank: Top 5%
PSAT (my weak spot): 200 with a 65 in Math
AP’s this year: APUSH, AP Stats, AP Spanish Lang., AP English Lang., AP Chem
Race: Hispanic (Mexican)

Hook: I don’t consider them hooks, just things that MITES looks for (or so I’ve heard).
-Neither parent graduated from high school, so no college degrees or history of math/science in the family
-Grew up in an impoverished household.
- I also learned English as a second language.

If any one wants to see my extracurricular activities, pm me.

There goes my chances :(

hey does anyone know how when they verify you if you got in or not for the MITES program? I looked at previous posts and it showed that some got theirs anywhere from March to April.

im pretty sure they mail you, however if you get in their fly-in program they call you.

I think that they are supposed to send you something in the mail in March to let you know. I’m just not sure when in March, but they don’t tell you wether you have been excepted or not till like mid April Ithink

Hey guys. Congrats on applying. I went to mites '08, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

yeah I have a quick question. Is college to visits to other schools set up a class trip or more on the choice on the individual, and if you were able to visit college in the are which ones?

Hi rosee09-
I was just wondering what your favorite classes were? Specifically, do you know about the genomics course? And also, can you choose between chem-biochem-bio, or is it by placement test?
Thanks for the help!

The most memorable part? I’ll have to get back to you on that one. The first thing that came to mind was 4th of July fireworks on the Charles River. By that time we all knew each other so it was fun hanging out with friends and relaxing after all the work we did that week (it was a Friday iirc). But there were tons of memorable moments so idk.

I still talk with just about everyone. There are a handful of people I talk with on a near-daily basis.

You can visit nearby schools during your free time, and there is no official school visiting activity. Most of us went to Harvard once or twice, and that was it.

You take a placement test in Week 0 (the first week). On that test you can indicate which class you’d like to be placed in, if you’re placement test doesn’t clearly indicate a match with a particular class. IIRC you get 12 points and you can allocate those points towards chem, biochem, or bio. I believe I put 9 points for biochem, 3 points for bio, and 0 for chem. I was placed in biochem.

And rosee09, who are you? I’m '08 too.

Also guys, don’t stress about your chances. I never thought I was going to get in, and then I did. MITES isn’t necessarily geared toward geniuses (don’t get me wrong - MITES isn’t for the weak, but they look for other things in applicants). Don’t be discouraged by other people’s posts; you don’t know what their whole application looks like.

So when do you guys think decisions will come out? For last year, it was mid april but for 2007, it was late march. Hope they don’t make it in may for this year, I would go crazy

I got an e-mail from MIT today confirming that they got my application, it said:

“Thank you for applying to the MITES Program. This email is being sent to confirm that we have received your completed application and will notify you about selection decisions by April 15th, 2009. We recommend that you keep this confirmation email.”

so I guess that answers the question of about when we should be getting our acceptance/rejection letters.
