I really need to start those essays soon. Being a white male, I have no idea what I am supposed to do with essay number three.

Also regarding the “Permission to Share Application” portion of the application, is the other programs affiliated with MIT referring to RSI? I was interested in applying there as well, and want them to definitely get my application.

well, i’m sending them b/c i’m taking the SAT after the deadline.
if you already know your scores, i dont know if you have to send in the official…
you can ask them.

For the online application, if you click on “Submit MITES Application” and scroll down to the bottom of the page, it says that “Required Supplemental Information must be postmarked by February 15, 2010.”
What exactly is this supplemental information? Also, should I mail the supplemental information - whatever that may be - and the recommendation letters in one envelope?

:) HI EVERYONE!!! i’m new to this thread, and i’m also applying to the MITES program. i really hope that the admission people don’t decide who to choose mostly based on tests scores /: i made a 24 on the ACT (27 in math and 22 in english) but it was my first time. GOODLUCK TO EVERYONE!!! i hope to hear from some of you at the program!! :)

@mystic, postmarked means just that. even if they receive it after the deadline, if it’s stamped before the deadline it’s good.
Received by means it has to be there

hey guys! I use college confidential a lot but I usually never post. I’m applying to MITES '11 too! But I was just wondering what affect these things will have on my probability of getting accepted:

1) I go to a really nice public high school. But my income is almost-if not below the poverty line. We cut a lot of corners so to speak so that we can live in the area…
2) I love math and science, obviously. My science grades are awesome and I’m in advanced courses for math (Calc BC) but I have gotten Bs all throughout high school in math…I’m happy with that grade since math is really rigorous at my school…but does it show a “lack of potential”?
3) There’s two other kids applying from my school…both are asian but I doubt their income level is as low as mine seeing that their parents are doctors or engineers. My dad isn’t employed and my mom has a regular, blue-collar job. They however have higher math grades than me. I doubt the MITES adcoms compare apples to apples but still…I’m the least likely to get in, from what it seems.
4) I haven’t taken the SAT once…I will be taking it in January and I got about a 200, i think, on the PSAT…(those kids got 210+) and I haven’t taken the math II SAT…I will be taking it this may…does it really matter?

I feel like MITES is for people who have potential…not necessarily the “perfect candidate”. It is a longshot for me…but it doesn’t hurt trying. I’m spending a lot of time on my essays…my science rec will be good, hopefully. The math might not be so stellar because I have struggled a lot in that class…
But ehh…

Haha, it seems your competitors have already been introduced to engineering and science if their parents are engineers and doctors. I think you will be fine. I have only taken the PSAT as well. Did you do well on the PSAT math section, or have some nice math extracurriculars to show you are still good at math, despite the Bs? Still, I think you have as much as a a chance as anyone else.

Does anyone know the answer to this:
Regarding the “Permission to Share Application” portion of the application, is the other programs affiliated with MIT referring to RSI? I was interested in applying there as well, and want them to definitely get my application.

I think that the being close to poverty can have a good effect on you if you can somehow incorporate it into a positive experience… other than your parents occupation and college years, MITES does not know your state of income…
and i highly doubt that they are looking for geniuses and instead are looking for people with less opportunities so they can work on them and make them great. so i’m sure that you still have a pretty good chance (: haha i didn’t do nearly as good as you did on the PSAT, good job! (:

@gangstergoose.
I haven’t taken any SATs or SAT IIs…my only standardized score is my PSAT but after I take the Jan. SATs, I’m gonna send them in…or maybe not.

my PSAT breakdown is: 67 CR 67 W and 66 M…so math is actually my lowest…lol.
But I have a job as a math tutor at a place…it’s actually a chain tutoring place…like they have locations across the country so it’s not just private tutoring or “tutoring”, you know like helping out your friends…

I don’t do math club because it clashes with my other club that is my priority. It’s a science club that I run and the sponsor is my chem teacher who runs it. She knows how much time I devote to it and she’s writing my rec so hopefully it’s good :D

I have a couple of other unique activities that very few kids my age participate in…and I wrote about one of them.

My application essays are pretty much done. Just some refining. How about you guys?

Are you guys applying to other programs?
I’m gonna do Questbridge College Prep and a local one that isn’t really prestigious but gives a really good stipend that I can put towards a car or save for college
If I don’t get into anything, I’m just gonna get a job and try and save up. That would be just as productive as participating in a summer program but a summer program would be awesome and more fun! Especially MITES!

I think they forward the application to RSI…maybe WTP? For girls?

I have a question… i know the word count for the essays is max 300 ; but one of my essays is 314. it was originaly ~360 and i shortened it, but now that im at 314 i dont see what else i could take out without ruining it. will that be a problem or is it no big deal ?

@collegezomg
The essays are sent electronically, so they can easily do a word count on them. I would try to cut that down a little just to be on the safe side.
