MITES 2012 Information and Discussion

<p>I like MIT, but I need to know if I REALLY like MIT through MITES. The nerd culture is fantastic, but people warn me about being top dog in high school and being average at MIT. Oh, and the stress, sleep-deprivation, and etc.</p>

<p>Gender: male
Region: ny
Race/Ethnicity: asian
School (private, public, magnet, small, etc.): small private
Your favorite extracurricular(s): math team, chess, basically anything logic-based
A quirky fact about you: can solve a rubik’s cube in under 30 seconds
Why MITES?: it’s MIT lol</p>

<p>Gender: Female
Region: Illinois

Quirky Fact: I was adopted
Why mites?: I want to be an engineer and I’m interested in MIT</p>

<p>Gender: F

School: relatively large public, not too competitive
EC: I do some things with government/politics
Quirk: I can flip my lips like an orangutan, however I did not include this in my application
Why MITES: to validate my thus far unsatisfactory life? Honestly, it was the whole FREE thing that hooked me in; I definitely want to learn and apply myself this summer, and this is a perfect oppurtunity
MIT? Actually not my first choice, mostly due to the hardcore math-science notoriety. I want to have a well-rounded education, plus, I’d probably end up at the very bottom of my class.</p>

<p>so MITES decisions will come in snail mail? :(</p>

<p>Yupp^ </p>

<p>And geeze, did you see how rough admissions was for top schools this year?</p>

<p>…and they say it gets worse every year. D:</p>

Why MITES: So I can be in an environment where science is the focus, not liberal arts!
MIT? I think the question is why NOT MIT?!</p>

<p>It’s almost the end of March! I’ve also pretty much accepted my imminent rejection, so… yup. I’m not even going to reread my essays.</p>

Why MITES?: I’m a super math science geek and I love learning!!! Plus I would love to meet other math science geeks like me ;D</p>

<p>Lol I didn’t realize MITES was even for non-URMs…</p>

<p>ya, it’s just harder for us to get in. the number of non-URM’s has been rising at MITES over the years. a couple of year ago, non-URM’s weren’t even allowed, but there seems to be more admitted every year.</p>

<p>Probably still won’t help me…</p>

<p>And MIT is currently my #1 school, so yeah.</p>

<p>Haha yeah… by increasing, it’s probably going from 6 URMs to 10 URMs. Probably doesn’t help me either haha.</p>

<p>Gender:Male

Race/Ethnicity:Hispanic
School: Small (about 100 students on our campus and I love it!)
Your favorite extracurricular(s): Chess
A quirky fact about you: I’m very shy
Why MITES?:I’ve always been better at math and I like it and it’s free and I feel that it would be a great experience and it’s at MIT and why is this even a question lol</p>

<p>I didn’t even think they’d have 10! Lol. Or 6! I thought it was like 1 or 2 every year. </p>

<p>And MIT is my # 1 right now too…</p>

<p>Gender: Female
Region: Cali
Race: African American (born in Ghana, though)
School: large…mostly known for athletics…somewhat competitive, but not really…>.>

I’m so cool
Quirky Fact: I can balance things on my head…including 3 textbooks while speed walking…lmao
Why MITES?: I’d like to continue to challenge myself to work hard and get some experience before I go into the even “harder” things. I want to major in BME and make some strides within the field. Plus…I’d like to meet other people with similar interests, too :D</p>

<p>And Les, omg…I know this guy who’s valedictorian @ my school and he applied to 6 ivies and didn’t get accepted into any of them
But I do know a couple Rice, Brown, and Stanford acceptances, so…</p>

<p>Wow everyone is so accomplished and sound amazing!, I hope I get to meet some of you this summer!</p>

<p>@emekablue: wow! that is amazing we have only had one competitive/ivy acceptance in our school’s history! …to Dartmouth. </p>

<p>this year’s “best acceptance” was at Northern IL University…</p>
