MITES 2012 Information and Discussion

Application open: November.

Application Closing: January 1.

Decisions mailed: April.

Pretty much what CPU said,
However, don’t take the dates they give you as set in stone (but definitely do so for the deadlines haha)- they notoriously run late…the application opened slightly late.

Application Opens : Mid November

Applications : Supposed to be Jan 1 (but the extended it to Jan 16 I believe this year, either way, be done before that!)

Decisions : Mid to late April (I got mine April 18!)

I did my entire application over winter break (I WAS on a college road trip but we got snowed in haha!), make sure to give your teachers PLENTY of time for recommendations, they’ll appreciate. For some of you, you may not have SAT scores yet, which is fine (I only had PSAT scores when I applied and it wasn’t a real problem), but I believe you can send in updated scores after you get them (though it really isn’t necessary)

I should tell you, it can be stressful, because after you turn in your application, you are not contacted until your decision and they discourage contacting them because of the volume of the applications, but be organized, get stuff done early, and you should be fine :)

haha I don’t know what you mean by “genius”? How is that even accurately portrayed? If you’re wondering if you need amazingly high scores and a perfect GPA, the answer is no.

I do know is that you have to love learning, and be able to show it in your application. The students from MITES came from a huge range of academic backgrounds (Calc I to Calc III and Physics I to Physics III), what matters is that you have the potential and the drive.

I would encourage you to apply, you never know what will happen (I certainly didn’t expect an acceptance and did not consider myself to be a spectacular applicant), don’t get discouraged at the get go haha! :)

I’m so pumped to apply! Last night I couldn’t sleep and I literally wrote one of my essays in my head… I couldn’t help it. :)

Just a question, is there a word constraint on the essays? If so, what is it?

was everyone at 2011 MITES from a different state or were there 2 or more people from certain states?

If I remember correctly, there was a 300 word limit on every essay.

There were states with several representatives, and some I’m pretty sure, from which there were none. I live in Florida, and there were about 7 others from my states, 2 in my city haha. Texas, California, and New York were relatively well represented as well. There were two cases in which two students from the same school came :P

Did most of the people who got in take the SAT’s already? Were they scoring 2100+?

I think most everyone at MITES had taken SAT/ACT, but I know that not everyone was 2100+. I can speak for ACT because that’s what I’ve taken and a few at MITES had and most everyone was 32-35ish range. But seriously apply even if you have scores less than 2100-- it simply is worth it! That being said, I believe that you can just apply with having taken the PSAT :)

When do you guys think the application will come out? Will they announce on the website when it comes out?

I agree with the last poster from MITES :)

I applied with only a PSAT score (I took my SAT the first time in January so I didn’t have those…)

There were quite a few people who hadn’t broken 2100, and even a few who hadn’t yet broken 2000. Test scores can only say so much about you, it’s honestly about your willingness to learn and potential to undertake challenging work!

From the website
