MITES 2012 Information and Discussion

Regarding the Regents, for MITES 11 about 7 students took the bus or train back for during the second week (not the one that you get there) and then they came back…they were gone for like 2-3 days to take them!

The site is now officially up!!!

the app is officially up!

And really? We’d have to travel back and forth?

yep but if i’m correct the weekend that you wish miss it’s only the magyver challenge so it’s not like you’re missing the trip to martha’s vineyard or the 4th of july stuff which was awesome  trust me, even if you have to miss say 2-3 days, THE OTHER 40 DAYS OF MITES ARE SOO SOOO WORTH IT. like seriously.

Hey everyone
I did MITES last year as well… and looking at this forum (as well as last year’s) reminds me of how incredibly LUCKY I was to have sent in the application on time and have gotten in. As someone mentioned, our applications were due January 1st last year but the due date was extended until Jan. 18th… I found out about the program that very day (the 18th) and did the application that night… the following day I asked my teachers for recommendations and that was that. I tell myself it was fate because it was all just too much of a coincidence. I had known about the program but my head is always in a million different places at once and it slipped my mind…

ALL of you who are interested just have to apply… don’t feel in any way that you are not qualified. There were SO many of us this past summer who felt that we did not deserve to be there for similar reasons and I’m sure we discovered in the end that it was all meant to be. I also would not mind answering any questions if you wanna email me… etc…

:)

Ahh, I don’t know what to do. I posted this[/url”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/1246558-help-i-have-plenty-ecs-but-no-honors-awards-yet.html]this the other day because I don’t think I have any awards or honors, and everyone told me not to worry. The problem is, the MITES application requires you to put an award or honor. Is there something I’ve listed as an EC that I could list as an award or honor, or should I just put the one distinction I have at my school that isn’t really very impressive (second place in the school on the AMC 10 two years in a row)?

Good luck guys. I’m an alum of MITES '11 and it was an amazing experience. PM me if you have any questions about the program.

Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using CC App

I wouldn’t worry too much about putting down your awards/honors.

If it makes you feel better, I didn’t have many awards (and still don’t…hahah) but I put stuff down like Honor Roll, and local competitions I’d won etc.

I also received a grant from Starbucks to continue my work in a community project I started a while back, so I put that as an award/honor as well.

If you’ve got anything like that, you should put it down :)

Okay, well my school doesn’t do honor roll and doesn’t tell us about local competitions. I guess I’ll have to put down my second place in the school on the AMC 10 because the field isn’t optional on the app.

I would like to hear what my chances of getting accepted into this program and any comments that might help.

Wow, I envy your math accomplishments  It’s a shame we can’t send in SAT 2’s and AP tests :(

Please chance me, any former MITES alumni. Thank you very much.

I know pentupenguin, I want to send my 5 on AP Chem and 800 on the subject test.

Alright. Hey guys, I am also a MITES '11 alum! (What are there, five of us on here now?) But yeah, like everyone else, I loved MITES. It was more than an amazing experience; it was a life changing one (and no I’m not being melodramatic).

I can also answer any questions you have, but I cannot “chance” anyone. I’m not sure any of us alums can. We’ve never worked in the admissions committee, and for many of us, we’re not even sure how we got in in the first place. It’s funny, I can’t even remember how many times I asked the admins what made them choose me. I didn’t (and still don’t) have engineering or math EC’s or Nobel prizes or anything like that.

I don’t think the MITES program is looking for scores. They’re not taking the top 60-80 SAT or PSAT scores that apply. They are looking for students who can form a dynamic class of driven students who can learn from each other as much as from the instructors. A class of students that can live amiably together for six weeks and become a close knit family. I think they use your scores and transcript just to see if you are able to do the work, because MITES is TOUGH, but it’s the essays that convey your character. Focus on the essays. Try to show who you are to the admissions committee through your words. The essays, I believe, are what carry you through.

So yeah, if you have any MITES related questions, PM me. Good luck guys!

Entrevox11… who are you? lol… This is Kathy. But yes I agree… we can’t really tell you how great of a chance you have to get in. I’d say everyone of you has the same chance of getting in as far as your credentials go… but like my fellow alum says… your words are what will make the difference

three things:

 1. I meet all their “additional factors” ( first generation hispanic american, first generation college, etc) except my school is pretty well off (its a STEM focused charter school with some sweat corporate funding) and I’ve had quite a bit of exposure to engineering, ap courses, etc; has anyone gotten in that has come from a similar school? Would it hurt me or help me to include things like my experience in robotics or internship, science fair, previous summer experiences (i got accepted to my state’s governor’s school last year) etc.?
 2. my SAT score is way lower than my PSAT score, and I took my SAT before I took the PSAT. Will they look more at my psat score or sat?
 3. my math score is consistently my lowest sat/psat score, but im in really advanced math classes (currently taking linear algebra, going for multiveriable calculus next semester); i think its because I essentaily learned all the SAT level math in one year (8th grade). Would asking my math teacher to put this in my recomendation hurt or help me? (like would they be like oh no, we dont want her she is weak on the basics, or more like oh that explains it, maybe she really is good at math?)

(1) Speaking for myself, I met all the criteria that you mentioned and my school is just a typical public school, however, right now I can think of at least six people who also met that criteria but went to magnet schools. There was also a student who besides meeting the criteria had gone to Intel ISEF. So quite frankly, no, I wouldn’t say that it would hurt you (seeing that there were people who were in the same situation as you) but then again I’m not the admissions committee so I couldn’t tell you. If I were you, I would put it. I filled out every field with camps, enrichment programs, award etc. and I got in. After all, it proves that you are qualified-- don’t let this criteria skew who you truly are.
(2) You don’t necessarily need to list your SAT I if you don’t want to. However, at MITES there were ranges of SAT’s from 1600 to high 2300’s; I would write it down if I were you. It’s only your first attempt; I’d think that they would consider that.
(3) Mmm… again, I can’t speak for admissions committee but I think they understand standardized testing. If you have consistently gotten good grades in those advanced math classes, I think that you prove that you know your math. Moreover, I was in Calc III which was actually introduction to complex analysis and some partial differentiation which is different from what you’ve taken. In other words, there is still room for you at MITES.

Hope that helps!! :)

It does, thanks =)

I was wondering if anyone who has been to mites can share their credentials. My app isnt very padded so im not banking on getting in but I would like to know how I stack up.

Thanks

Would it be a good idea to make my EC essay about a research internship in a neurosci lab?
