MITES 2012 Information and Discussion

Los Angeles. :)

Hey MITES hopefuls!
I was wondering- have any of you previously attended summer programs at other universities?

Nope… and it shows. I had my teachers send in my recommendations incorrectly… I forgot to tell them to print it on stationary, sign, and scan it…

Hi guys, I want to know what the campus life is like.
Are you allowed to roam around the school after lecture, and are you allowed to use the school’s facilities?
I like playing basketball and I wanted to be able to play in their gyms and work out if I do get in.

yaya2295-- The question is not really whether you are able to roam around campus after lectures, but whether you’ll have time to do so. During the week, your schedule is absolutely fully loaded with classes scheduled back to back to back. It wasn’t unusual for me to leave the dorm around 730 and not get back until after dinner, around 7 at night, and throughout all of that, there was only an hour long lunch break.

to everyone stressing about essays-- Don’t worry whether they are too formal or too informal. Make them sound like you. If you’re a formal person, then that will show, and if you’re more informal, that will show as well. But if you try to sound like someone you are not, you run the risk of sounding artificial, in my opinion.

Thanks for the info! I have another question: what is the schedule like for the weekends? Do you still have to attend classes or are they “free days”?

CantConcentrate: Is it imperative that they send in their recs like that? I didn’t even think of telling my teachers yet. They haven’t sent them yet, so it’s still okay, but I have to make sure to tell them now!

one other question.
for highest level of education completed- what if your parents didn’t get their HS diploma?

^ I know, right?? I had the same issue, but the lowest option is high school diploma, so I just left it as that.

…Unless, we are supposed to leave it blank.

^^ Yeah, same here, my dad didn’t get his diploma… I feel like that is something they would want to know.

How exactly are you supposed to send SAT and PSAT scores to the MITES office. On the online application you can simply input your scores but from what I’ve read on this thread you also have to send it to their office? The Collegeboard only recognizes MIT but not MITES so is it ok if I send them to MIT?

You can fax them your scores.

@coffeeandtea: I contacted MITES about it on Friday and I’ll probably hear back from them tomorrow. I’ll let you know.

I agree with entrevox about the whole free time thing. If you have the time, and it’s not in the middle of the night, you can walk around campus, and you can use the athletic facilities with the supervision of a TA- this past summer the TAs made a google calendar for their exercise schedules and shared it with all the MITES students so that anyone who was interested/had time (unlikely) could join in.

From personal experience, I’m a swimmer and had high hopes of working out over the summer. I planned on swimming and running, and even bought new running shoes cause the old ones were worn out. What happened was, I ran on the first day of class, and after that could not keep up with both class and working out. I think some people managed to run everyday, but it really depends on how you manage your time and how important working out is for you (and how little sleep you can run on, cause before MITES, I couldn’t not effectively function on less than 6 hours of sleep per night)

Weekends are also pretty busy, there is something planned for at least half a day on each weekend (group, MITES-Wide activities), then outside of that, you have plenty of P-setting to do, office hours (which you should make use of) and in my case, on of my classes also had a recitation during the weekend. You’re on your own for all your meals during the weekends, so I think most weekends that I had time, lots of us went out to dinner in Harvard Square.

If i got 163 on my psat but have a 4.0 gpa and 4.61 unweighted, do i still have a chance or should i just not apply? if it helps i’m currently taking 3 AP science classes and got A’s in all of them

^Don’t bother applying. It’s almost impossible to get in with a PSAT score below 200. I’m guessing your school’s grades are waaayyyy inflated.

@Sabor2/ ambitous1 Well there were people with a 23 ACT that were accepted…

There’s about two weeks before the deadline is due, so if you can get in everything by then, I’d say apply.

@sabor2 my school does not inflate grades for your information it was all hard work and no social life
@AlphaR thank you will it also help if i’m an immigrant that just moved to the states 4 years ago from Africa?

ambitious1- don’t let that discourage you from applying, there were people from these year with and even maybe 1 or 2 who had lower scores.

Like me and many of the other alum have said here, admission is not solely dependent on your test scores- it evaluates you as a person. It takes into account your circumstances- if you went to a top 100 school or not such a great one, if your school offers up to calc 3, or there are no calc classes, and yes even whether or not english is your first language. The point is, you need to show that whatever your challenges may have been you have been able to and are willing to work that much harder to overcome them and achieve your goals.

Also, you shouldn’t assume that ambitious1’s has an inflated system…every school is different. Numbers can only tell you so much, if you’re the top of your school, you’ve pretty much done all you can.

So, I’d encourage you to apply. It is NOT impossible to get in with a score under 200- I know a lot of people who did not score a 200 who . Plus, I think it’s a great sign that you’ve taken 3 AP Sciences courses! If you want it, work hard on your essays, put time into it, and make sure to ask your recommenders asap to do letters for you if you haven’t done so already!
Good luck :)
