I don’t think my chances are high, but nonetheless, I’m still a bit hopeful.

It’s not that weird meeting people from the Internet; I met up with ~7 of my friends in New York City a couple of summers ago. The awkwardness stopped after the first twenty minutes or so.

Plus, any feedback as to the content of the blog is greatly appreciated. If any of you become Mites '13ers, PM me and I’ll add you to the blog to continue the tradition. Stay cool everybody. (:

Hey everyone! Really excited and nervous MITES’13 applicant here from New York.

Thanks to all of you for making the application so much less stressful by helping to answer some of the questions I had! I cannot wait to find out what happens in March, and best of luck to all of you who applied! :)

the longer I wait and the more time I spend thinking about my application letter and credentials, the more faults I find with myself, like my incredibly low PSAT score, how I’m asian and not really a minority, and my parents who both graduated from college with fields of study related to engineering (since they seem to like first generation college students better)

I should probably stop thinking about this!

Dang mijuuki, you’re pretty confident. Buying the shirt would depress me if I don’t get in. I could always keep it for personal use, but it would serve as a constant reminder.

I would like to do a quick poll of ethnicities and/or races. I know a lot of Asians think their chances are slim, but how many of you even apply? I’m guessing not a lot.

@jchan3580: Omg I just processed your post right now. You sound EXACTLY like me. Other than credentials and essays, my PSATs were pretty horrible as well. And err, I
m Asian too and both my parents graduated as engineering majors. .______________. Sometimes I regret putting that… but oh well. O: MITES
judgement should prove best.

I’m black, white, & Native American. Mostly Native, but I’ve always identified as all three.

I know we don’t have results yet, but can we do intro posts? I just think it’s odd how this thread is at twenty-five pages, but we don’t really know anything about each other…

I’m Moni :). I live in a mainly white suburban/wanna-be ghetto town in CT and go to a pretty mediocre public school. I love music, science, and art, and have an unhealthy obsession with rock music + concerts; however, I’m not ballsy enough to crowd-surf (yet) or mosh (never going to happen). I’ve always had an appreciation for piercings and tattoos, although I only have (about to be 4) piercings, and I’d never get a tattoo myself. I also play piano, sing, can play the clarinet, and wish I knew how to work my guitar. Reading is definitely a favorite past time as well; my favorite website is GoodReads. Last, I’m a social networking fiend, and a bit of a health nut.

Computer programming/science is something I’ve always been into; I’m not ashamed to say my computer is one of my best friends, and that I know my hex colors better than your average teenager (my middle school summers were devoted to web design). I’m also really into your, I guess, “typical” sciences; I was always that obnoxious little kid who never stopped asking “why?” and occasionally “how?”… lol nvm I’m still that obnoxious kid.

i’m asian too! i live in new jersey, i play the violin, does anyone here go to msm? i really would like to learn to play the piano, and i don’t have much of a life this year because of school -_-" but i did cross country last year and hopefully will do it next year
I’ve always been confused by music genres, especially alternative- i’m not quite sure what that means…Most of the music I listen to is chinese/korean, but I like listening to any music, especially if I haven’t heard stuff like it before. I really want to learn how to design websites and edit videos, and of course I love any kind of science-physics/chemistry, biology not as much (don’t like dissections) but I still find it interesting. @moni what’s your favorite book/piece of literature?

I’m half Filipino half white. I want to study chemical engineering or maybe materials science/engineering. I like thinking a lot about anything and everything. I like trying to find out how the world works (technology-wise and natural science-wise (because I can just look outside and think about how the mountains came to be and why there is droplets of water forming on the window)). This is why I really like the books and websites titled “How Stuff Works” or something to that liking. I like math and science and play basketball when I’m not doing homework or in clubs (robotics/science O).

@icefairy: Yeah, I don’t exactly understand what makes something Alternative either, haha :). I don’t think I’m familiar with any Chinese/Korean music, although I do like a good number of Japanese songs.

The Season of Passage by Christopher Pike. “The Season of Passage, originally released in 1992 and apparently written early on in his career during the seventies, is Pikes take on a science fiction story of a manned mission to Mars and the horrors that can be found on a dead planet.” I haven’t read it in awhile (it’s kind of hard to find), but I haven’t found a book that I love as much since.

I’m a half black, half east-Asian male, although I don’t identify with either ethnicity that much (throughout my life, I’ve leaned more towards black, but different people perceive me as different race primarily. I’ve been told that I’m considered as black, and others have told me they consider me to be more Asian.) I go to an STEM magnet school in Texas. I hope to go into physics in the future, possibly in astrophysics or particle physics. My top choice for college right now is MIT (and how wonderful it would be to spend six weeks to get to know the place through MITES!) Since everyone is talking about music, I guess I’ll go into that a bit. Throughout the years I’ve liked many things; for example, I used to like rock a lot, and a couple years back I used to be really into rap (I even wrote raps myself, and was told that I was quite good.) Lately I’ve enjoyed listening to classical music, especially piano pieces, although I still don’t know very many and haven’t tried to find new ones for a while. I do like to read as well, although I’ve neglected that for a while now (but I did read many books, nonfiction, over the summer.)

I wonder if this is enough information for people that know me to identify me. It most likely is, considering one person from my school figured it out before I posted this, solely off of my test scores and ethnicity.

Oh whoops I forgot my musical preference. I like 80s pop music and classic rock. It’s mainly what my family made for mix tapes on road trips, so when I was little that’s what I mostly listened to. Some artists would be Billy Joel, Queen, and New Order.

Haha, it’s starting to sound like a dating site. Just kidding…
I’m Asian, Vietnamese to be specific. I love science and medicine and am hoping to decide on whether I want to go into engineering or medicine this summer. I play the violin and really want to teach myself how to play the ukulele. I love Taco Bell and Cafe Rio. My perfume scent is coconuts! I love spending days in the library and Barnes and Noble, just drinking coffee and reading classics and nonfiction (although it’s hard to even find coffee in Utah sometimes). I’m an AP student and am really involved in school extracurriculars, but I’m definitely not an athlete. If I were trapped on an island, I’d want my computer and glasses the most. As for music, I like classical music when I’m reading/doing homework/stuff like that and Ed Sheeran when I’m doing some math. Uhh… and I just realized how boring I kind of am :B
