MITES 2013 Discussion

I’m from the Southwest.

Texas!

I’m considering Rice as a match/low reach. However, I’m hesitant because I don’t like the idea of being a Hispanic at a school called Rice. People will ask if I’m going to Beans for grad school.

Hahaha good one x)

Naa, Texas is pretty chill. Southern and Mexican cultures fuse here, so people are pretty comfortable with Hispanics.

Of course, you might encounter the occasional 19th century racist Democrat that fell into a time vortex and ended up 150 years in the future, but people are really cool over here. I’ve been to Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, and a couple small towns just passing by and I’ve never gotten any crap for being Hispanic.

Wow I hope I don’t get into the rest of my program but one… It’ll be so hard to choose between research or MITES for example

What is the average ACT score at MITES? I’m from Boston :stuck_out_tongue: just not attending school in Boston

Probably like 10000000000

I’m southwest! I applied to MITES, Clark, SIMR, and the TGEN Helios program… I just need one and I’d be thrilled!

Southwest for the win \m/

Hey, what universities do you all want to go to?

Is MIT everyone’s first choice?

Princeton’s my first choice. One of the reasons why I also signed up for LEDA. But MIT is definitely up there.

And that’s right, Leviticus. I’m guessing your username has some sort of biblical reference to it? (Had to google that one too  )

Sweet :)

And yeah, it’s the third book of the Bible. Not my favorite one, but it’s pretty hardcore and straightforward and I think it’s the one with the coolest name haha :)

Theists… tisk.

I’m a Christian.

Tisk?

I just got a contingent full ride. I don’t know if I should be angry or flattered. (contingent on Merit Semifinalist)

Ahhhhh, is there any other Asian here?

@Rivstein: Depends on whom you ask. I’m usually dubbed cute/adorable (happens when you’re 5’0" w/ curly hair & a cuddly personality), but I have been called sexy by boys with overly active sex drives.

I’m not actually on the volleyball team (I was thinking about doing it freshman year, but decided against it); it’s just that my school does this annual volleyball lock-in from 9:30 PM to 6:00 AM where you play until you fall asleep or lose.

Also, I don’t want to apply to MIT because I’m not entirely science/math-oriented; I’m more 50/50 or 45/55 (45 being STEM). I’d love to be an engineer if I had the mind for it, but I don’t. (I’m substantially better at science than math… but that’s partially because I’m not very details-oriented, and I always make stupid mistakes in math)

Double also, yes, you are coming off as fairly creepy. Haha.

I’m surprised that you guys thought that I was a guy… rofl. People say that my style of writing gives it away all of the time.

@Lev: My first choice is Wesleyan, followed by Carleton College.

Slightly off-topic …

People annoy me.

My grandfather is upset that I’m number 8 in my class only because my best friend is number 6 and we’ve been “competing” (not really … we stopped actively competing in grade school) since Kindergarten. “I know she’s your best friend, but I would rather see you two as 6 and 7 or 1 and 2 or 5 and 4.” I would actually be ahead of her if I hadn’t taken art my freshman year (I’d actually probably be #3 or #4… ugh), but does it really matter??

@lldm21, Let me ask this question for Rivstein… Pictures please  lol Just kidding.

3 more weeks until decisions @@. I’m hoping that SIMR gives me nice birthday present with acceptance

My best friend and I are 2 and 1, respectively. He couldn’t catch up if I died, though.

I really think a lot more girls should apply. After all, the odds are definitely in your favor. You can still major in other non-engineering fields at MIT though…

@Riv: hahaha :). Our val is taking 3 APs this year & he currently has a high A in AP chemistry, which put him above our sal, who has only taken 2 AP weighted courses and has gotten low/mid A’s in both. They both have 103-105 GPAs though, while I have a 98.69 (only because I got ~102+ in all of my classes last year… I was such a slacker freshman year), and my friend has a 99.6. Crazy.

I know, but your question specifically asked about engineering ;P. To be honest, I’d just feel completely overwhelmed at MIT. One of my good friends was deferred (white male, low/middle(?) class, no hooks), and I make a point to never talk math with him because it’s just … crazy lol. If I were surrounded by that sort of intelligence on a regular basis, I have no idea how I would survive.

& yeah, more girls should apply, but a lot of girls also think that math & science are gross.

Your top two sound like the first 15 people at my school. There’s only 96 people in our class (which is funny, because that means top 10% is more exclusive than top 10). Last time I checked, I’m number five. It’s crazy though, because to be in the top half of our class your GPA must be over 90. To be in the top 10 your GPA has to be over 99.

I missed a lot. :P

I’m a dude.
