MITES 2013 Discussion

My top undergrad is definitely Olin, but for graduate it’s MIT.

Is everyone here in the top 10 of their class?

I hope not, for the sake of odds.

I secretly hope that everyone who isn’t on CC, but still applied, has ****ty stats.

This place looks like a party!

Guys, I have to agree–we NEED a big chat to party together after notifications come out. I’m certain we’ll all have something to do (though not as exciting) this summer if we don’t get into MITES.

CC is messed up sometimes. If your val and sal are only taking 2-3 AP’s, that’s kinda fishy. I’m taking 3, 6, 6 AP classes in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade respectively. My GPA is not above a 4 since our school doesn’t do 5’s. It’s so hard to really stack up against people from different school environments XD

I’m a girl. I’m reallllllyy struggling what to narrow down my schools to. I have like 14 in my list right now.

If all fails, I can go to Georgia Tech <—nice school, but it just seems so dead. So many guys, and it’s like down the street :-/

Thinking about…
Northwestern
UW Madison
UM Ann Arbor
Harvey Mudd
Emory
Penn

MIT
Cooper Union <— this school is INSANE xD
Caltech, Stanford, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon

I’m like 33/170 in my class I think…we don’t rank (for obvious reasons)
but everyone in here is a genius taking like 17 AP’s before graduation…

My school only lets us take 1 AP sophomore year so I have to catch up by taking 4 then 7 -.-

I agree with the chat party idea! You guys all seem so awesome.

There are way more girls here than I thought. I also assumed everyone was a guy (I’m a guy as well).

Definitely not in the top 10. I’m 17 out of about 500-600 at my school and I’m almost positive my rank’s going to drop (orchestra’s a regular class here and I’ve been taking it every year). I assumed that if I made all A’s it wouldn’t be a problem. I was wrong.

Lol Cooper Union is pretty insane. That full-tuition scholarship is pretty tempting.

Am I the only one who hasn’t bothered thinking too much about college yet? I feel so lazy.

I’m only taking two AP’s this year and four dual-enrollment courses at a state college.

Also, two honors classes.

:( My school doesn’t weight, so it bumped me down to like 9/700 or something. It sucks because barely anyone even takes AP classes here, or at least a lot of AP classes.

@Jhan: Not when your school only offers 5/6. My school only sends ~40% to college, and the average SAT is in the high 1400s; college preparation isn’t really a priority here, although the APs that do run are all up to caliber.

Let me think…

Calc AB, Chemistry, Lang, Studio Art, USH … I think that’s it. We’re running Music Theory for the first time next year (holy aldkjfaf I’m so excited). Chemistry usually runs every other year. AP Lit is an option, but nobody signs up because the teacher has a horrible personality and we have UConn dual-enrollment English classes that are weighted the same. I’ll have taken all of these APs except for art by the time I graduate.

Next year’s sched:

AP Music Theory
AP Calc AB
Academic Writing - DE
Modern European History - DE
Spanish V - DE
Physics - DE
Chorus II - H
Intro to Psych/Sociology/Principles of Engineering/Computer Programming/Some other cool elective

The same guy I was talking about earlier actually has almost the exact same schedule this year (music technology for the elective, and regular music theory), and he says he gets half as much work as he did junior year (again, same exact schedule)… which makes me even more excited lol.

Also, my class is 264ish.

But number 3 doesn’t have an AP class to her name, which ***es *all of us off…

MITES admits 80 to my knowledge. They accept about 40 of each gender, not overall. Only 40 would not be helpful for our chances.

My first choice as of now is MIT (want to major in Physics.) However I don’t know too much about college yet, so although it’s my top choice, I don’t want to commit to anything (although I most likely will go to MIT, if I am accepted.) Currently ranked 2/~90. After junior year, I will have taken 13 AP tests, and at least 20 by the end of senior year.

Actually a good way to test your major interest at MIT is opencoursrware. I want to major in math and biology. The math classes are easy until after DFQ and LA which are both easy to me, the one taught by Gilbert Strang… Also the calculus class by David is good too. Im currently taking 4 APs but next I’m going to take my 16th APs… My school doesn’t rank… Ranking in my opinion is stupid because it would be beneficial to take more AP classes/ Honors and drop regular classes(orchestra and etc)

Also guys, keep in mind # of APs dont matter except for GPA boost… its about getting good scores 4/5… 3 in my opinion looks bad. Is everyone 17 by the start of the program?

What is opencourseware?

I’ll still be 16 by then

Yeah. I turned 17 on Sunday.

17 living the dream… Not
Nice to see the thread being really active, but i have to go pack like 4 pages to make sense of anybody’s conversations XD. Btw interesting to see people from many different school backgrounds/situation. At our school everyone in our top 50 takes like 4/5 APs, i.e. still 3/400 with 6 this year sigh

I will turn 17 two days before the start of the program. Since we probably should be there a day early, I’d be late to celebrate my birthday at MIT by one day. :/

We would still party haha

dokingsler, I know right?
Wow I’ve missed a lot @_@

@Run

Yeah, we’d still celebrate with you. No worries!

I seriously wish I went to a less competitive school, now… Here, the top 30 or so are CONSTANTLY in a bloody battle for the top places. Honestly. It’s horrible. So much GPA-whoring that it’s not even funny. Don’t take that summer school dual-credit US History class worth the same as an AP class? BAM DOWN 10 PLACES. NO MERCY >.< I’ve taken… 7 APs so far. 1 last year (only one I could take) and 6 this year. Ranked 17 / 653.
So, yeah. I hate rankings.

But I love you guys <3

College-wise, I really want to go to Stanford. For me, my list goes Stanford>>MIT>>Brown>>UChicago>>Northwestern/UC Berkeley>>Rice. Rice is great, but it’s right next door (I live in the greater Houston area).
