MITES 2013 Discussion

@lldm21 I haven’t filled out any job apps. Am I supposed to start now? Now that I think of it, this may be a smart idea, but what if they want me now (like everyone else)? Ha! jp I go to school from 8-5 as a requirement.

Also, I’m going to try to visit WUSTL and Purdue because they’re the closest. I don’t know how I am going to get to the east coast from IL. There are a lot of schools I like out there. I guess I’ll just have to hitch hike. Ha!

@Nashia: Hmm, I was told to start April/May for summer jobs, but I also need a job asap, sooo… I’ve been applying for a wihle.

What kind of school do you go to? I went to an arts magnetic school freshman year; caught the bus at 6:30, got home around 5:30. Couldn’t handle it xD

Lol, I have no idea. I’m debating applying ED to Carleton if I don’t apply ED to Wesleyan/Brown, but … that probably wouldn’t be smart. Especially because Northfield is very rural, the school is incredibly small (2k undergrads!), et cetera, and I don’t know if I’d be able to handle living there for 4 years.

@Alpha2014

Believe it or not, your comments made me feel better about my chances, thanks. I know you’re bound to get into one of the programs you applied to (non-safety).

I wish I had applied to a lot like everyone else. I would actually take time out of my day to compound my overall chances of getting into a program (percentage-wise). Unfortunately, I have to rely on the 4,6% at MITES alone. (11.4% if you include the minor programs).

@Nashia

Ethnicity?
State?
Stats (if you don’t mind)?

@lldm21, @Rivestein

I go to a College Prep Charter High School, where the school day ends at 5, not including the ride home or extracurriculars. (It’s not as bad as it sounds)

Ethnicity: Mexican and African American (basically)
State: IL
Class rank: 1
G.p.a: 5.0
ACT: 23
*I know this is extremely low. Please don’t judge me! I am terrible at standardized tests.

It won’t make that much of a difference. You have a good GPA, you’re #1, and you’re Blaxican-American.

However, I’m guessing your class size is small and you go to a charter prep, which sounds just as bad as private school (admission-wise).

@Rivstein,

I already got into a Rockefeller Summer outreach :o I’m waiting on lab placement and SIMR results. The acceptance rate is ~6-8% for SRP @ Rockefeller so I’m happy already.

@Riv Yeah, but it is a public charter college prep school. As weird as it sounds. Fun Fact: I don’t have a principal either. I have a C.E.O. who is also the superintendent. Talk about a monopoly? Ha

Also, my counselor said it’s all about the essays and not so much the ACT scores, but what if the ad. officers think my grades are just inflated? There is always a catch isn’t there?

Honestly i think public school GPA are all inflated but the fact you’re rank #1 shows something at least. It shows you can work hard and are taking advantage of everything the school has to offer you.

Magnet**

Have you tried the SAT? My ACT score would be around that, too, but my SAT score is leagues better.

Me too.

ACT: 27
SAT: 2140

1st tries on both, testing is expensive.

ACT measures knowledge that can easily be studied for. SAT is a good measure of logical thinking skills (natural intelligence). You can study for it, but it will only help you so much.

ACT is less time, but with straightforward questions.
SAT is more time, but with puzzle-like questions.

I see what you mean. And I sure hope it does count for something.

Now that you guys have mentioned it, I probably will take the SAT. I never thought there was really much of a difference. I guess there really is though. Thanks

@Nashia1505: You’re definitely not the only one! I’ve got 4 or so more programs that I applied to, all of which send out results in mid to late April. So yes, the next few weeks are going to feel like a good month or two. XD

Oh, and if anyone here doesn’t get into any of the programs they want to do this summer, don’t fret. There are plenty of opportunities in your community; if there really aren’t any at all, start something. If I don’t get into any of the programs I applied to, I’m planning on doing an internship in the community and maybe (maybe maybe) researching at a lab at Rice. :)

@Hoctopi That’s a really good idea. I totally forgot about getting service hours. Seems like we’ll all have something to do if we don’t get in.

Not to mention wreaking general havoc with friends…

^made me lol

Eureka! I will mow my 114 acre lawn!

Edit: If you’re wondering, the land has been in my family for years. It’s the only thing of value we own, so don’t go calling shenanigans on my parents’ 23k income.

@Rivstein Are you serious? Can I come live with you? I’ll only need 4 acres. lol

hey Riv you should lend me a good acre lolz and guys scores aren’t everything for this kind of program, even less for Mites. Our Val. had a 2390 and a 35 and he didn’t get in, but for college he got into Yale early, and GT on a full scholarship, duke on a half, and princeton. This program is not life or death: make the best out of what you got and good things are sure to come
