MITES 2016 Discussion

Does anyone has to retake the old SAT on February? Is it necessary to mention it in the 6th (optional) essay?

@neoking yeah same… I feel like I’m starting to become redundant even in my first 5 essays…

@CR2400 You have to put in the emails before Feb 1st. Like it won’t let you submit unless all applications are “pending” as in you’ve typed in the emails and sent requests to all recommenders.

How are you all doing with the 300 word limit on the essays? I’m having trouble getting the right amount of words. For example, I was writing the 2nd essay and I only had 260 words so I decided to write a bit more, and now I have 326! And on the 1st essay I have 399 words, I don’t know how I’m going to cut that down.

And also, are you all going to get anyone to look over your essays?

@dsi411 Yeah I’m usually 20-80 words over the word limit, but I’m having my english teacher and guidance counselor look over them, and so far, my english teacher has been able to help me cut out some redundant parts or make ideas more concise. You definitely want to have other people look over the essays to help you with shortening them.

@nocando123 getting 2250 is really good, as is a 740 in math and an 800 in reading. I only got a 670 in math and a 790 in reading and I thought my score was good haha

Really excited. Just submitted my application. I hope I get into E2 or MOSTEC, I would like to do MITES but it will conflict with vacation! Good luck to everyone

Hey everyone! Today is the deadline for the application and I just wanted to wish everyone good luck. I’m so nervous…I want to find out if I made it already!

Wow, this thread is pretty inactive compared to last year. Last year there were 13 pages by this time. Is anyone here?

Hey guys!

I understand that about 3 Caucasians are admitted to MITES each year (ouch). Does anyone know if this statistic discourages many Non-minorities to begin with, lowering the initial non-minority applicant pool? If not, do minority applicants still dominate in terms of numbers? And information is appreciated! Best of luck to all!

How many African Americans are in MITES MOSTEC and E2, curiously anybody know or has a guess. From what I see they target Latinos more Than African Americans IDK

Can anyone answer this question:
If it says to round your GPA to the nearest tenth and you have a 3.97, would you round it to 4.0? Or would that be misleading?

Hey guys, past MITES alum, MITES TA, MIT alum, current MIT EC (prospective student interviewer) and person having been involved with the office in a variety of roles here.

@KonRaim that number isn’t right, and there’s no way to know if a seemingly low number might just be representative of the applicant pool in general. I will say that there’s no cap on how many students of a certain ethnic group get in… and that’s because it’s illegal to do such a thing. (Something something reverse discrimination)

@BlackKidCalTech i don’t think latinos are targeted more than AA students and the populations seem to be about equal across the programs.

Also please please please no one posts scores, no one but the selection team can chance you.

@Eutectic Is it ok If I ask you questions about MIT. MIT is my dream school.

Just submitted the app. Glad to stop thinking about it till April.

SSP essays are coming up though

@blackkidcaltech : "From what I see they target Latinos more Than African Americans "

Can you tell me why you are led to believe this?

@Waiting2exhale I wasn’t sure that is why I asked. I only assumed this because most of the college confidential posts from 2014 and 2015 were from Hispanic as well as the alums there. Sorry if it offends you I was just curious about the statistics.

No offense at all, just wondering. I think most of us would like to know more about how the program works, even me, a parent whose son was not accepted one year, but whose daughter was a few years later. We are Black.

@blackkidcaltech

Are you sure MIT is your dream school, your username is caltech?

I like the name
