I'm a materials engineering student but I want to apply for the BS/MS in either EE or ME. I want to broaden my career scope, and i'm also interested in working on intelligent nano systems, especially for computers - which one would be better and is it even a good idea to mix the degrees like this?

It is not really a good idea to get a Masters in the same thing you did Undergraduate for. Your academic perspective lowers and you also don’t have much breadth to your knowledge and expertise. In fact, it’s not even a good idea in the long run to go to the same school for your Masters; the only reason it’d be okay here is because it’s accelerated. The convenience of no extra tuition cost outweighs the long-term disadvantage.

As far as which one is best for your interest, I wouldn’t bother with Mechanical Engineering. There’s nothing for you there in terms of knowledge that helps your interest in nano systems.
