Mom doesn't want to pay for college

I am going to graduate next year and I have to start applying for college. I recently saw a college in Tenesse and I live in California. When I mentioned it to my mom she said that it was too far away to go alone so I should go with my sister to South Carolina but, I don't want to go to the same college as her. She then said she wasn't going to let me go and she said she wouldn't pay so I was wondering if you guys could help me come up with ideas of how to raise money during senior year to pay my airplane ticket ?

Sounds like you will need to find your own tuition in addition to an airplane ticket? Or am I reading you wrong?

Maybe s/he got a full ride to the school in TN, and only needs the plane ticket (possibly,) :/

Does she not want to contribute to your attending any college at all, or not to specific colleges she disapproves of because they are too far or something?

If she does not want to pay for your college, then you need to find a full ride merit scholarship in order to be able to attend college.

Yes I need to find my own tuition in addition to the plane ticket

Would she pay for the one in South Carolina? Btw, what school does your sister go to?

Yes, she would pay for that university. But, I don’t want to go to the same one as her. She goes to a university called Bob jones university she wants to send me to a Christian college.

What are you stats?

Why don’t you want to go to bob jones- because your sister goes there’s, it’s too religious, etc?

If it’s because your sister goes there, your best bet is to find a school you could afford with stafford loans, your savings, a part time job (how about one of the many awesome california publics?)

If it’s the religious environment, try to find a less conservative christian college- there’s plenty of those.

Yea, don’t go to Bob Jones. It isn’t a reputable school.

You’re not going to magically find money to pay for another school.

What school in Tennessee are you looking at? You may need to broaden your choices.

What are your stats? GPA? Test scores (including breakdown).

Even if a school offered you a large merit scholarship covering full tuition, you’d still have to come up with room, board and book money.

Why did your mom allow your sister to go across the country without any other sibling there?

How much does your mom pay for your sister to go to Bob Jones?

I’d expand my college search. Does she want you to attend a religious school? How about one closer to home like Azusa Pacific, which is twice the tuition of Bob Jones but does give merit scholarships and there would not be the cost of plane fare. If you don’t want to go to Bob Jones, ask her what she is willing to pay for.

Perhaps there is room to negotiate an agreement such as, you attend a CC and get stellar grades for 2 years, then she gives you more choice on where you go the next two years.

Or maybe you just have to do it her way. You will not be able to raise your own tuition costs, unless it is to a CC or you manage a full ride scholarship with stellar stats.

I find it rather odd that you asked how to get a plane ticket, knowing you also need tuition. Doesn’t really make sense to me.

My GPA for the three years is a 4.1. She let my sister go far away because some of her friends were already in the school so, she thought it would be best.

Well, you have an excellent GPA, and should be able to get some kind of merit money if you keep it up. Don’t insist on the Tennessee school: ask her what your options are, both in state and out of state.

If your stats qualify for a full ride from a school in the list of http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships-17.html#post15743177</a> , then you can attend such a school without needing your mother’s financial support (though you may have to take a Stafford loan for small miscellaneous and travel costs).

There are also competitive full rides at many other schools, though you probably want to have at least one of the automatic ones as a safety.

You may have to do this if your mother refuses to pay for any school you are willing to attend. (What schools would she be willing to contribute to your costs for, besides Bob Jones?)

Well, you DO have the legendary UC system, so it can’t be that bad…Worst comes to worst, just go to one of the UCs

Re: Bob Jones University

BJU lost tax-exempt non-profit status in the 1970s over racial discrimination and segregation, including the ban on interracial dating (which was removed in 2000). It has not reapplied for tax-exempt non-profit status. BJU’s current statement on race and interracial dating: [Statement about Race at BJU | Bob Jones University](http://www.bju.edu/communities/ministries-schools/position-statements/race-statement.php)

BJU is currently does not have regional accreditation; it has national accreditation with the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS): [Accreditation | Bob Jones University](Accreditation | Bob Jones University)

Your mother isn’t doing you any favors.

My parents also refused to help pay for college that wasn’t near home, so I ended up enlisting in the Air Force and paying for school with the education benefits. I know it’s a drastic step, but I figured I should throw that option out there. There were lots of other people who enlisted for the same reason.

That was years ago, and I don’t know what GI benefits are like these days.

Also, while I would be perfectly happy hiring someone who went to a genuinely accredited school like Biola or Brigham Young, I would be inclined to toss any resume that had Bob Jones University on it. It’s just not a legitimate university.

Your mom wants you to go to a for-profit, regionally unaccredited, religious school with a racist background.

just no.

Are there other “religious” schools for which your Mom will pay? And are any of these alternatives more appealing to you.

How does she feel about Pepperdine or Santa Clara?
