Mom of bride or groom dress suggestions 2021-2022

This brand is good quality and has some elegant dresses with sleeves. Here is one:

How about a fit and flair?

Thanks @soozievt . That is a beautiful dress and I also like both the navy and the light blue color. But, it would probably be longer than I want. The model is 5’11" and it is long on her and I am only 5’6".
I’m hoping to go to some stores after the holidays to try some things on and see what kind of style might be the best on me.

@sevmom, I’m 5’4". The dresses are tea length and so it may still work for you. Definitely not full length gown.

Those are lovely, romantic dresses. I normally never look at such, but this brand has several that are lovely and don’t look as long.

The Downton Abbey dress comes down to the floor in the back on the model.

If you’ve been up and down the interwebs with no luck at present, it probably is smart to wait for the spring line (cruise wear LOL). So many sizes are sold out now on so many dresses online - people buying for the holidays and family celebrations etc. I do think trying on a variety of styles (if available) in a store is a good idea.

I don’t know this company but they’re inexpensive, made to order in a lot of colors, and get good reviews.

Thanks @Marilyn, I have concluded the same, best to wait to see what comes up down the line. Too many styles, colors, or sizes are sold out. I have seen the JJsHouse and eShakti stuff online and like some of the styles but am reluctant to order. I really think I want to try things on locally or order online from a place that has easy returns. I ordered my dress online from Macy’s recently and had an easy return to the store yesterday when I needed to return it.

Just got home for ds1’s Covid do-over wedding and wore this dress in purple, one of the wedding colors. I LOVED it. You can dress it up with jewelry and fancy shoes or keep it simple. Warm enough for a transitional outdoor wedding, has a sexy slit and is super-forgiving for losing/gaining weight if that’s an issue. And the price is right. Also, I had them hem it a little shorter like the model is wearing it to show off my heels and so that when I changed into lower shoes at the reception (boots, actually!) it didn’t drag much. It looks kind of sexy but not too revealing or matronly.

Nice choice! Simple yet sophisticated. No cold shoulder, asymmetric sleeves, or other such nonsense. I also like the gentle back ruching. Kid came up with a term “rbd” (“ruched butt dress”) when she was looking for hers… that was the style that fit her body well.

I looked at JJ’s House too but was also reluctant to order (worried about quality with the price point). Will they let you return it if it doesn’t work?

Thanks for the links, Bunsen! I should have noticed them, lol.

Momofmab and Youdon_tsay - those dresses are such great combos of tasteful body-con and elegant!! Love it!

@CollegeNerd67 , Not sure about returns as I have not looked closely into them or ordered anything. I would imagine their return policies are on their website somewhere.

From what I’ve read in the past JJ house is a made in China company and the reviews aren’t great. I’d stick to companies that are better known.
I don’t know about where you live but when I was recently looking the stores had very little to almost zero dress inventory. I went to one Nordstrom in LOS Angeles and they had eliminated the in store dress department. As much as you might not like it ordering online seems to be the way to go.
I discovered pretty quickly what brands I liked and what size I needed. Amazon and Zappos are really quick. Macy’s has a good selection. I did pretty well ordering from places that had free returns. The only one that didn’t have free returns was Saks off Fifth.

I 2nd looking at Kay Unger. Nice selection of dresses. Also a lot of the websites will offer a discount on your first order. I know Adriana Papell does.

I am okay with ordering online. I just did recently from Macy’s and returned to a Macy’s on Monday in Pittsburgh since I am visiting there now. I will take a look in person again after the holidays where I live, to check styles and fit, but am prepared to order again online if I don’t find anything in a store.

I actually almost ordered an Adriana Papell dress online a couple of days ago but it was a final sale and non refundable, so decided not to.

I would only order from a place that allows returns. On a whim, I tried a beaded gown option from Bloomindales and quickly learned that I didn’t love beading & sparkles (for one thing, way too heavy).

I know some moms end up going the bridal shop route - but I felt like the gowns there, for the most part, would be at a much higher price point than I was willing to pay. Then you have to wait weeks or months for it to come in and what if it doesn’t end up working?

In addition to Nordstrom Rack, there are a couple of others (Rue LaLa & Gilt) that offer marked down designer clothing. Be careful of their return policies though. Some are final sale.

Momofmab - my D and I stopped at David’s Bridal (affordable chain) for prom dresses a few years ago - lots of lower-price-point, off-the-rack gowns/dresses!

My niece-in-law ended up buying her bridal gown in the prom dress section of one of the high end department stores. Can’t remember if it was Niemen-Marcus or Nordstrom. It was half the price of anything she saw in the wedding section and was beautiful.

To MOG’s to “wear beige and keep your mouth shut” is a JOKE. JOKE. Ha, ha. Funny. Just to tease that MOG’s are the background and don’t count. But of course that is not true these days. Just a JOKE.

Yes, our grand niece also wore a simple white prom dress, a spaghetti strap, rusched bodice, sheath type. It was simple and perfect for her and quite cheap comparably!

We went to a wedding just last night. MOB wore navy, MOG wore a dark dress as well. A wedding of about 160, lots of friends of bride and groom. The highlight was a lion dance at the reception. The groom’s family is originally from China. Lots of fun and something I had never seen before.

I just saw a new style on Nataya that I kind of like. The wedding is in May, in a country inn, garden type setting. I’m bad with links but it is the vintage inspired sky blue dress. # 40816.
