“MONEY analyzed graduation rates, tuition charges, family borrowing, and alumni earnings (plus 22 other data points) to find the country’s top values.”
Most interesting result for me… Ramapo College of NJ @ 113, who placed above the following name schools seen here often…
Lehigh - 117
Northeastern - 123
Franklin & Marshall - 124
Bucknell - 125
Emory - 128
Washington U - 129
Colby - 130
Harvey Mudd - 132
Villlanova - 153
Carnegie Melon - 155
Case Western - 177
Rochester - 182
Dickinson - 192
Kenyon - 214
Carleton - 244
Wowza. The overall list has TCNJ at number 35, one spot ahead of Williams College, which is the USNWR #1 LAC in their national ranking.
I know, lists don’t matter but it’s nice to see TCNJ in that company regardless.
it is a good value if you have to pay full price!
If you pay $30K and get a $57K job right out of school or pay $60K and get that same job…which is a better value?
Bopper, I see you post often about TCNJ. My daughter is going to apply ED. She can’t submit the app yet because she is really torn on majors. She’s debating between Engineering and Comp Sci, but also has an interest in IMM. I suggested, go the Comp Sci route and do IMM as a minor…they pair nicely. Its a tough call because she really liked physics and has a math minded/problem solving brain. Any experience with either major? Outcomes? I feel like TCNJ is an exceptional school. She could do “higher” but the value proposition is just THE best, IMO at TCNJ
My DD goes to TCNJ…she majors in Psychology. I agree…TCNJ is a great value. My DD applied ED as well as there were no other colleges that she liked more and is affordable for us at full price.
Some things to think about:
As you may know you have to apply to a particular major when applying to TCNJ. Some of these are very competitive.
One idea is to apply to the most competitive of those majors (no I don’t know what is the most competitive) and then choose another if she doesn’t get that major.
What kind of engineering is she interested in?
Has she taken any programming courses? Did she like them?
What does she see her self doing when she graduates?
Obviously math minded can work for Engineering or Comp Sci
and just because I went to CWRU: has she considered an engineering physics major? http://bulletin.case.edu/schoolofengineering/engineeringphysics/
@NJRoadie, any thoughts?
I would like to ad that it’s possible to switch majors at TCNJ. My daughter is a junior at TCNJ and she has several friends that switched within the past two years, one from engineering into CS and others into other disciplines.
FYI, according to the 2017-2018 Common Data Set, TCNJ conferred 2% of its degrees in CS and 6% in engineering (all disciplines).
Also, TCNJ offers an Open Option Engineering program for undecided students. They take a common set of courses the first semester, with a guaranteed placement in a specific discipline within that first year. (https://engineering.tcnj.edu/academic-programs/degree-programs/open-option-engineering/)
Of course, if she doesn’t get in ED, she can apply again RD and get a chance to reconsider her intended major at that time as well.
Good luck!
CWRU is a GREAT school, but too far for her. She was seriously considering Rowan for a while, but spent more time there and didn’t feel as connected as she did at TCNJ.
If she goes the engineering route, she will definitely do Open-Option Engineering. We actually met the Dean of Eng. at one of the Lion’s Day events and he assured us there are no problems going open option and then getting into any of the specializations. I recently heard it’s tougher to get into the Engineering than it is the Comp Sci, so I think I might steer her toward open option engineering and then let her decide if it seems right for her.
She has gotten some admissions “intel” and feels confident that she could be accepted to either program, it’s just tough deciding which. To answer, what does she want to do??? Wellllllll, that’s part of the problem with choosing a major. She isn’t entirely sure. She is very artsy and creative, but loves to be challenged. I think Engineers and computer scientists both have these qualities.
Comp. Experience to date are a web design class, a python class, and some other digital media type experiences. She’s dabbled with CSS, HTML, Adobe Creative Suite. She loves all that stuff. She loves everything Disney and would love to work for them creating experiences (that could be as an engineer OR a computer engineer/programmer).
I appreciate your input and it’s great to hear your daughters are having great experiences. Hope the first day was great
