Any btdt advice for those moving in soon? Things you wished you had known about, or brought with you? Things you brought, but didn't need?

Also, what do students do between moove-in and the first day of classes? My son is moving in on the 20th, but classes don't start until the 26th or so. I know the night before classes start there's "gone to Texas," but are there other activities, or do students just hang out, buy books, learn their way around campus, etc.?

Any other advice for the incoming freshmen?

My daughter is in San Jacinto this year as well; our first college experience at Loyola New Orleans was a chaotic move in day. When our second daughter moved in at San jacinto last year I feared the worst. However, my worst fears were unfounded, as the scheduled move in time was cleared and parking was smooth; the whole process was uncomplicated and easy, even though UT is humongous compared to little Loyola New Orleans. I don’t know where your son will be living but if it is San Jac or Duren with private baths, I’d strongly suggest changing out the toilet seat for one with a top so things don’t fall down in the commode—yuk. Walmart and target are nearby for purchase of anything you need.

UT housing puts out a great little manual that tells you what to bring and not to bring; they are big on “green” stuff so keep that in mind.

Overall, I’m terribly impressed with the way things work for move in. Moving in on the 20th will give him lots of time to get used to campus and stuff. The Gone to Tx celebration is great-you can watch it on the internet if you like.

If you have further questions you can PM me and I’ll be glad to tell you what I know.

Get the earliest move in appointment on Sunday. Pack everything in your car on Saturday and leave early in the morning on Sunday.

Less traffic getting there, parking spaces in front of the dorm to unload, moving carts more readily available, cooler than later on in the day, more people to help you move, etc.

Worst time to move in is Saturday afternoon. You will have to park a block away and lug your belongings in the hottest part of the day.

Are the desk chairs in the dorms decent? Can you bring your own desk chair if you want? If you do, can you “turn in” the desk chair that comes with the room?

How are UPS/ fedex deliveries for students handled? Are they addressed to the student’s dorm room and then left in a dorm mailroom (if there is such a thing)?

The moov-in guide says that only compact florescent light bulbs can be used. My son bought some LED lights he’d like to bring. Does anyone know if they are allowed?

You cannot remove the furniture from the room. The chairs are wooden and not really comfortable. My roommate put her chair in the closet and used her own stool thing.

Yes. They leave a slip in your mail box and/or email you to pick up a package. You go to the front desk and show your ID and they will give it to you.

So, how difficult is parking? Do you have to park in a garage and haul stuff from there or what? I have never moved before in my life! I have no idea how to do this.

In reality the first day of real move in is on the 21st to the on campus dorms, idk about the private ones, if you move in the 18th you’re gonna have to pay an extra $150

My sister is moving into the Baylor dorms a day before I move in, so my parents decided to rent a small U-haul trailer that’s about 8 feet long to fit all of our things in. Do other people do this, or am I going to get strange looks. I hope finding parking won’t be so difficult.
