I'm going to start my freshman year at Northeastern this fall as an electrical engineer, and I was wondering if there was any way to add more classes to my schedule other than the ones that are required for all engineering freshmen. Could I like talk to a teacher and see if I could add their class to my schedule? I'm really interested in organic chemistry and I want to take a course in it freshmen year before I start forgetting some of the material!!!

I’m also an engineering major. I had wanted to take organic chemistry freshman year too, but the advisor I talked with said that they don’t want students taking the class that early because they’ve generally had bad results with students doing that; I’m sure if you talked more in depth with an advisor they would probably help you get into the class - it’s just not normally done. It wasn’t super important to me so I just decided to take a different class earlier. I also asked about extra classes, but she told me we’re not allowed to course overload freshman year.

Engineering majors have a tight schedule, and it’s a tough schedule in general. After the first semester, you can reassess and see how things are going, but I think you’d probably be best off following their recommendations for the first semester. You definitely don’t want to overload the first semester, even if they let you. You’ll have plenty to be busy with, and not just class work.
