Is there any way to get more financial aid from a UC? I have a 3.75 GPA, several extracurriculars and jobs, and my expected family contribution is $0.
UC’s give good need-based aid so what does your FA package include? How much more do you need?
Recent Changes in your family income?
Freshman or Transfer?
Which UC’s?
For the two UCs I’m deciding between (we’ll call them A (UCSB) and B (UCLA)), they give me:
A ) $12,570 in Cal Grant
B ) $12,570 in Cal Grant
A ) $6,345 in Federal Pell Grant
B ) $6,345 in Federal Pell Grant
A ) $3,537 in Health Ins Grant
B ) $2,668 in SHIP Grant
B ) $3,752 in Institutional Grant (University Grant)
A ) $3,000 in Work Study
B ) $2,000 in Work Study
For both UCs, I would have to live near (off) or on campus. So, the aid I need would fully cover my housing. There are no changes in my family income. Lastly, I’m a transfer student.
Also, on my UC application, I put that I would be living on campus (in campus housing, either dorms or the campuses’ apartments). Just in case this makes a difference!
EFC is $0? but that does not mean you will pay $0. You have been given a generous FA package so if you take out the Federal student loans in the amount of $7500 each of the next 2 years and work during the summer for extra spending money, you should have all expenses covered.
UC’s do not negotiate Financial aid.
If you live off campus, usually the expenses are less so your aid may be reduced. Compare of off-campus Cost of Attendance vs. the On-campus Cost of Attendance for each school so see what the difference will be.
Your FAFSA should accurately state where you will be living.
If it’s off campus and not on campus, I would strongly suggest you make that change ASAP.
UCLA might have health insurance help too if you need it. If you have your parents’ insurance, you might not need it. For example, if you have Kaiser, UCSB requires you to buy other insurance but UCLA has plenty of Kaiser facilities nearby.
Thank you so much!
Would the change have to made on the FAFSA as well as with the UC? Does this impact financial aid?

You need to change your housing designation to off campus on the FAFSA and resubmit it. Let the UCs of your choice know this change.
Need based aid is based on the cost of attendance using the housing choice you will be using. I don’t know the difference between off and on campus housing at the UCs. Yes, this could affect your aid.
