I'm an out-of-state student and I think I should have a decent shot at UNC-CH Morehead-Cain. I'm president of three clubs at my school (founded one of them), I'm on several leadership committees, 100+ community service hours per year I think, 4.0 UW, #1 in class, 2340 SAT, etc. However, I'm kind of lacking athletics-wise. I exercise plenty on my own time and I've been doing a specific type of martial arts twice a week for the past year. Varsity sports were never an option because of all my academic and work responsibilities. Will this suffice? Do I have a good chance?

shannoqr, Morehead-Cain is highly competitive, as you know. As to the athletics, the application specifies that it needn’t be participation in varsity sports. Here’s the description of the “physical vigor” requirement:

“It’s as simple as a demonstrated commitment to an active lifestyle and a dedication to fitness and physical activity.”

Okay, thanks! Do I sound competitive otherwise? And can I do it without living in NC or going to an affiliated school?

Last year about half the Morehead-Cain scholars were from out of state, so it’s not a disadvantage. Show your guidance counselor the link above, and talk it over. I’d say it’s worth trying.
