Berkeley, hands down! It has the nicest campus and the city is awesome. Plus, San francisco is like 15 min away on the bart. Im excited as hell to go next year.

GO BEARS!!!!!

GO BEARS!!!!!

Let's not hate on UCSB for being a victem of its time. Berkeley, of course, has what we now consider the nicest building because the neo-classical style that it was built in is back in fashion now. I think UCSB has the nicest overall campus with architectural dominance going to UCLA.

UCSD has the best atmosphere. What is prettier than the ocean?

UCSD has the view of the ocean and UCSB has its own beach. Which one would you prefer, living right on the beach or living 5 blocks away from the ocean with a beach view? =)

Ya I have always heard that UCSD has the best campus of any UC; but it is right near the border with Mexico so that could get a little hairy. :P

i've never been to berkeley, but i've heard it's nice. (the others that i did not visit: irvine, riverside, and merced)
i think that UCLA is top.
when i see you guys putting sb at the top, it makes me wonder why.. i dont know if it has to do with WHEN i went, but i thought it was gross. it may have been something to do with the fact that i was in santa barbara for 3 days and the sun did not come out once, but, i thought the campus overall was not appealing. the surrounding areas were not appealing to me either.

but then, when i see pictures of uci i am amazed.

and davis, davis seems to plain to me. the buildings dont match. gross old buildings mixed with modern buildings doesnt work for me.

i'd choose ucsd anyday!

I've been to Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCI, and UCSB. Out of all these, I liked UCLA's campus the best, for architecture and location. It really depends on what kind of campus you want. For instance, I like urban surroundings so I thought UCLA was really appealing.

Here are some random shots i've took mostly at the beach of UCSB, i'll go out and take some actual campus shots sometime soon; but what makes UCSB beautiful mostly relies on its natural surroundings -- mostly the beach:

It's definitely nice to clear your mind at the beach when school gets rough.

How about we all just argue that our school/the school we're going to is the best. /sarcasm

that's pretty much what this thread is all about...

Hey yen, how much of it is university property? Does the school own the beach?

I'm pretty sure that we own the beach, how much though? I'm not entirely sure. Maybe someone else can fill me in.

Wow, nice pictures Yen.

I'm goin to CAL in the fall and when I went to Cal Day, it was something else. It's like the colleges in movies, only better. I visit my brothers in LA; the campus is nice and in a good area. All the UCs i have seen look good.

Yen you got some photog skills.

dyip10, wrathletik - thanks, I appreciate the comments; the amateur photography is just a side hobby for fun, glad you enjoy it. :)

I've heard that UC Stanford is the best

Stanford is too plain.

no vested interest, just a mom who visited most of these recently and attended Scripps College for 2 years and UCSD for 2 qtrs back in the day...

nicest surrounding area/neighborhood:
top choice: UCSD- just too bad you can no longer scramble down the cliffs to Black's Beach like you could in the 70's...but La Jolla and points north are super nice (I live in that area) with many fantastic beaches to choose from...
or for less urban feel, UCSC
misc. comments
UCSB loses here for me due to Isla Vista (cramped and dumpy), but yes, you can walk right to the beach
UCB: Berkeley area was seedy IMHO, aggressive street people asking for not just change but "$5" and your doggie bags from restaurants? can't walk alone at night? no thx.

nicest architecture: UCB hands down
I agree w/ above that many campuses suffer from mix/match of old/new and different styles...then there was Cal POly SLO and also one of the UC's (can anyone say which one?) where the architecture buildings were the ugliest on campus! go figure...

landscape/grounds of campus itself: top choice UCSC
also..
honorable mention for being much much nicer than I expected: grounds of UCD... the walk along the creek with all the lawns/trees/shady nooks to study in? the quad w/ all the grass and tress? WOW! I was WAY more impressed than I thought I would be, given the location of Davis

So, if only we could put the buildings of UCB, and the grounds of UCSC right next to the beach like UCSB, with UCB's buildings, we'd have the whole package!

I didn't visit UCLA, but I hate traffic, and so, what you have to go through to GET TO, and LEAVE UCLA is a huge negative for me
UCI- we just did a drive-by, so other than commenting that general location is just OK, can't comment. I agree 10 min from beach is much different from being ON the beach
UCR- sorry, zero on all counts, I've been there for a debate tourn w/ d

Great thread, thanks for posting it. This can be a major factor for those who are aesthetically inclined (all other things being equal), after all, you could be spending 4 years plus of your life there.
Good luck to all in your decisions and college careers!

just a mom of a UCB or UCSD hopeful, class of 2011
